Crosstalk 49: Britton And Force One Seven Throw Down

August 01, 2008
Crosstalk 49

The Crosstalk crew welcomes a very special guest to the studio -- Nael Shehade of Force One Seven -- to talk about Hip Hop and R&B production, and the music scene in Chicago. Nael may be only 22, but he had plenty to say about the Chicago club scene, the joy of negotiating contracts, and learning how to put your foot down for the good of the project. The new Force One Seven album is complete after two years of production, and you can download it in its entirety here.

If you know Britton, you know that he's had some Hip Hop production experience himself, and he and Nael have to decided to enter a friendly competition: to see which of them will be the one to bring back old school, RUN-D.M.C. style beats. Judging by the shades he's been sporting of late, Britton might have the edge.

stop coughing during podcast

By: Justin

I've just recently discovered your podcasts and do enjoy them...however, do me a favor and tell the skinny dude (dont remember his name nor do I know if he's still on the cast as I just pick a few at random for both video and audio versions)to cut down on the cigarettes...man, I smoke and his coughing and hacking makes me want to cringe. Not to mention it doesn't sound professional at all. He's a smart kid and I tend to agree with what he has to say.

Working for four radio stations I can tell you for a fact that constantly coughing and hacking on the air isn't exactly going to draw more listeners.

I look forward to listening and watching more.

BTW. That was the worst guy

By: Anonymous Coward

BTW.

That was the worst guy you could have interviewed in this podcast.....ever The guy was obviously clueless about most things. You guys were asking basic questions and he clearly didn't know what you were talking about 90% of the time. Genius.

You guys eed to seriously learn some freakin pre production basics. And while I'm here...here's an idea...why dont you have a laptop sitting there beside you guys so you can just do a flippin Google search instead of just guessing at stuff all the time.

I've listened to many of your Podcasts now and you guys are hilarious...but seem fairly clueless when it comes to music equipment and software. Is it to much to ask for you guys to do 2 minutes of homework before turning the mics on?

Like the one (awhile back) where you guys sat there guessing what Sonar ACT was when you could have just taken 5 seconds and Googled it (pre production) and found out what it was....and why you ask....BECAUSE IT HAD ALREADY BEEN OUT FOR A YEAR!

actually

By: bholland

we talked about ACT in Sonar 7 in september or october of 2007, right before the big fall AES release of 7. We had no idea what it was, because the Sonar press releases were not worded in a way that made it clear as to what was different about ACT from other features in similar programs. Basically, I realized as soon as I saw it that it was like a less user-friendly version of Ableton's Midi editor. Although the sonar ACT makes it easier to edit individual control parameters.

Anyway, I appreciate the feedback.

No, actually

By: Anonymous Coward

ACT was out in version 6. The explanation on the Cakewalk website was about as clear as it could be....so were the youtube tutorial videos.

I thought you used Sonar.

i do.

By: bholland

...But I think I skipped from 5 to 7. i've been using logic and ableton lately, but having gotten Sonar 7 recently, I've been back on that kick. I was given the impression by the Cakewalk press releases (at the time) that it was this great, new thing. Of course, once you use it you realize what it is and that it is nothing that revolutionary...just a logical way to assign custom midi control.

I'm with you, though, regarding the sonar segment on that particular show. We are taking your feedback into consideration, so I definitely thank you for commenting and being honest but diplomatic.

Well,

By: Justin

in your defense they did act like it was a brand new feature....not to sure why that was. Perhaps it's because when it was first out it was fairly buggy.

I dont want you to think I'm discourageing you because I do enjoy your show. You are my morning drive entertainment in fact.

It's just working in radio and as a engineer, pre production is a big part of my day to day activities so when I see somethings that seem a bit...oh....101 level I can get pretty fired up sometimes.

I think you guys are on the right track and the humor is excellent. I also enjoy how utterly blunt about gear you guys can be....in the positions I'm in both in the "real world" and online I cant get away with that so Kudos to you and I look forward to more shows!

Justin, we can't thank you

By: oomalley

Justin, we can't thank you enough for your input. Believe me when I say we take all feedback seriously, but especially when couched in such constructive language as yours! In fact, we've been meeting about correcting the exact shortcomings you detail; I think it'll result in some major improvements in XTalk in the coming episodes.

Thanks again, and thanks for tuning in (as it were)!

thank you!

By: bholland

Believe me, justin, I think your feedback is awesome, and it is great that you are trying to help us make the show better. If no one critiqued us, we wouldn't know how to make the show better than it is right now. Thank you again!

Thanks goes to you guys...

By: Justin

...for taking the time to make these podcasts. I know it's not easy work and I also know from experience it's not easy being the "voice" of any given issue or topic as the onus is then on you by default to make sure your facts are straight and ducks are in a row because the listening audience will take what you say as fact and rely on you to be an expert on a given subject. And hey, I know that no one person is an expert on everything musical...I also know how it goes getting some crazy press release and then going on the air having to sound like I'm an expert on the subject, like I've been covering the subject for years. But...thats just the nature of the game being the guy behind the mic.

Consider yourselves lucky......atleast you dont have to talk about politics all flippin day long :)

If you guys ever need any help dealing with production, research, whatever... drop me a line and I'll see what I can do....because though pre production considerations will only improve the overall show....my motives are failry selfish.
Podcasts are my radio and without them I would be forced to listen to myself all day long....and frankly I dont find myself that interesting :)

Y'all have a nice day and keep fighting the good fight.
