Access Virus TI Arpeggiator Three

Bill Holland finishes his tutorial on the Access Virus TI's arpeggiator functions. Here, Bill goes over how editing the note length and swing factor can change up your arpeggiated sounds.

You can catch the first part of this tutorial here, and the second part here. Keep an eye out from more from Bill on the Access Virus TI as he takes an in depth look at the oscillators.

BILL HOLLAND: So reducing: less staccato-ey, less dancey. You can really take advantage of this note length function by extending your notes...

[BILL PLAYS ARPEGGIATOR]

...and if you turn the Swing Factor on, you can get a little bit crazy with how the notes are played out...

...and it just holds that note out a little bit or extends where they come in, so it makes a little more syncopated. Now, when you take parameters over to three, this turns Hold on and off. What Hold is, is right now when I'm playing the notes -- let's go over to the keyboard and I'll show you. You'll notice right now that when I hit this key [BILL PRESSES A-flat] and let go, the arpeggiator turns itself off, so it's like I'm playing notes. So if I won't have one, well I can still do that and do like something Devo style where it's [BILL PLAYS DEVO-STYLED PASSAGE], you know, very staccato-ey. But if I want to hold it down and do something more of the Italo Disco vein or mid-80s high-energy dance music [BILL PLAYS ARPEGGIATOR WITH HOLD ON], and then I can change up the pattern while it's playing [BILL CHANGES PATTERNS], and the octaves.

[BILL TRANSPOSES OCTAVES WITH PASSAGE AND CONTINUES PLAYING]

Now, if you want to work chords in there, you can do this too.

[BILL PLAYS CHORDS]

So, the arpeggiator's an extremely powerful tool within the Virus, and it's just one facet to what you can do with the synthesizer. What we're going to look at next is we're going to take a more in-depth look at how the oscillators on the interface work.

I'm Bill Holland for Gearwire.Com, and stay tuned for more on...
