Access Virus TI Synth Programming With Bill Holland, Part Three

September 27, 2007
Access Virus TI

Bill Holland wraps up his tutorial on synthesizer creation on the Access Virus TI. Here, Bill has his soft knob parameters assigned, and the GeArWire patch is now complete. Though Bill claims it's not the best patch in the world, that's just Mr. Holland being modest. Watch the video to hear the best patch in the world.

If you missed the first two parts of this video, you can view part one here, and part two here- because it wouldn't make much sense to start a tutorial two thirds of the way through.

I have one of these beasties at home (Virus TI keyboard). I'll try to make some scripts and a recording (trial over the next month or so). I'll leave it to you guys to decide what to do with it then.

BILL HOLLAND: If I turn on the arpeggiator [BILL TwEAKING TEMPO AND USING ARPEGGIATOR], extremely useful when using the arpeggiator. You can also adjust the patch volume [BILL TwEAKING PATCH VOLUME], panorama which is kind of the spread of it. Smooth mode on, transpose, here; let's look at transpose [BILL TwEAKING TRANSPOSITION], gone to 64 [BILL TwEAKING TRANSPOSITION AGAIN], and you can probably assign that as a variable as well in the soft knob, so if you wanted to be able to control your transposing to that extent on the fly, that could be a great way to do it. Bend down, Bend Up, -3 here, take that down to -64 [BILL TwEAKING BEND PARAMETERS], goes into your pitch bend, so now if I pitch bend I can go -64 pitch bend or +63 up [BILL MANIPULATING PITCH BEND], and you can change the scale for that as well; in this case, it's exponential and I can change that to linear [BILL TwEAKING PITCH BEND]. We can also -- oh, we're back to Detune.

So we're back to Unison. We've created a basic patch, not the best-sounding patch in the world but, you know, you sometimes are very limited to how much time you have. So, let's maybe take the voices down a little bit [BILL TwEAKING VOICES IN UNISON]; yeah, that sounds a little bit better. [BILL PLAYS A NOTE] Good. Now, we want to store this, so you'll notice it says "Store", "Undo", "Shift", "Search", "Config", "Edit". We want to hit "Store" obviously. It asks where you want to put it; in this case, we're on RAM-C, Patch No. 57, Patch Name "GeArWire!", so we're going to keep that, go over on your parameters. This is GeArWiRe! You like that. Okay, now you should just be able to hit "Store", "Single stored". Now we have the patch, [BILL PLAYS SOME SYNTH LINES] and now we can play around with our parameters we have assigned: Mutate [BILL PLAYS SOME SYNTH LINES AND ADJUSTS SOME PARAMETERS]. And again, you can assign these knobs to anything you want, which is great, and then you combine that with the filters and the oscillators, you have full control over a patch. Check out Gearwire for more very basic, out-of-the-box looks of the filters, the oscillators, and the arpeggiator.

My name is Bill Holland, and this has been Gearwire.Com.
