Acoustica Mixcraft 5: Amp Sim, Notation, And Video Support, Oh My! (Video)
It's sometimes called "Garageband for WIndows," but as you can see in this video from Winter NAMM 2010, Acoustica Mixcraft has a lot more to offer than simple multitrack recording for your PC. Mixcraft 5 -- currently in beta -- adds so much functionality and flexibility to the affordable DAW, it's amazin they're still able to offer it for $75 US (download).
Gino Robair spoke with Acoustica's Senior VP of Development Dan Goldstein about the major new features of Acoustica Mixcraft 5, including notation, a slew of virtual instruments, and the optional ability to stop whatever you're working on a just watch Shark Week reruns for eternity. I mean video support.

mixcraft 5
I have been using Mixcraft sense it was Mixcraft 1. I have watched it grow into the software it is today, Mixcraft 5. Now I am a Beta tester of Mixcraft, and have tried Mixcraft 5 for several months now, it's pretty darn cool too.I am not a professional in the field of music in anyway. When I discovered Mixcraft, I had a small four piece band, and we needed a Demo. I couldn't afford a studio, and the software I found was too expensive and way too complicated. I stumbled across an ad for Mixcraft,(just plain Mixcraft then I belive), and downloaded the demo version. There it was the answer to this musian's prayer...lol! Easy to use, and the price was down right affordable. It wasn't long they came out with Mixcraft 2.0, I purcased it and the rest is history. The band no longer exsist, but with Mixcraft, I no longer need one, it's all in the software! I have a few covers and an original posted at Mixcraftlive.com/Eddie K , as well as a whole lot more Mixcraft fans. I have copies of other DAW software, some free, some expensive ones that came free with equipment I purchased, but none as good. There are others like me out there, maybe this will lead them in the right direction. I enjoyed the interview too,now I know what Dan looks like..lol
Cockos Reaper
Can touch them pricewise. Actually I think Reaper beats them pricewise. . .This looks dope though.
Nothing against Reaper but..
Nothing against Reaper but it doesn't do notation, it doesn't work with loops, it doesn't come with 3000 awesome loops like Mixcraft does. I don't think it even handles video. True, it costs slightly less than Mixcraft, but for me Reaper is a lot harder to use, very technical, kinda ugly. Just check out the instruments that come with Mixcraft and compare them to Reaper! No contest. Paying a little more for Mixcraft and getting Lounge Lizard (SO COOL) is worth it right there. I use the included loops and the virtual instruments for pretty much everything I do.
Still, there's stuff that Reaper does that Mixcraft doesn't do, like 64 bit plug-in support, so I guess it just depends what you want. Mixcraft gives you a hell of a lot for the price, though, way more than Reaper give you.
Mixcraft review
First of all,i'd like to say that i've used Mixcraft for quite a long time-ever since version 3 first came out.I am in no means an amateur or novice in Audio-in fact i have a degree in Audio engineering,sub-class Mix (frequency response).
I have been working as an audio engineer for two years now,and have been composing in my free time for a slightly longer period.During that time i've used a combination of software due to ease-of-use and feature, and Mixcraft has always been in the center of the package.
I currently use some high-end software, like Cubase 5,Reason 4 (for substitute soundfonts),NI Kontakt 3,Waves Platinum (VST Plugins that probably cost more than most studios) and Mixcraft. The ease of use Mixcraft offers is unique. From simple multitrack recording to Post-production,everything is easy with it.The only thing AM 3 and 4 weren't able to do was Mixing.True, they came with Inserts per channel and AM4 had VST Support, but the lack of Aux Sends (busses) crippled the software's ability to mix.The solution was to use Cubase 5 to mix.But starting with Mixcraft 5 and the introduction of the new (better looking AND better sounding) mixer with aux sends,i have no reason to use Cubase.
