Akai Professional LPD8 And LPK25: Teeny Tiny Controllers With A Big Punch At Summer NAMM 2009

Akai Professional LPD8 And LPK25

Portability is such of high value to musicians. Getting that flash of inspiration may come at an unexpected time hence these musicians who always have laptops strapped to their shoulders are always looking for miniature-sized interfaces and MIDI controllers to take command of every software sequencer, audio editor, mixer, synthesizers and instruments, effects, installed in those portable computers. About to be introduced in this summer’s NAMM, Akai Professional LPD8 and LPK25 are the ideal controllers for the laptop-powered musician.

With each controller weighing less than a pound and having a dimension of less than 13” across, the LPD8 and LPK25 can fit snugly inside any backpack, laptop case, or messenger bag. Even if these things amount to toy-like dimensions, they pack the controlling power of even the biggest Akai controllers.

Based on the MPC line, the LPD8 offers the same degree of control that MPC lovers have always appreciated. The LPD8 has eight blue light-up pads that are velocity sensitive, which are perfect for programming rhythmic or melodic parts. These pads can also be used to send program change information to software. Eight assignable Q-Link knobs can give users hands-on control by assigning each knob to virtually every parameter in their software.

The LPK25 can be described as the littlest brother of the MPK series of MIDI keyboard controllers. Basically a scaled-down relative of the MPKs, this tiny keyboard controller has 25 miniature velocity-sensitive keys with synth action. An arpeggiator, octave up and down, sustain, and tap tempo controls all placed in an easy-to-learn layout make the LPK25 a small thing with big control capabilities.

The LPD8 and LPK25 both work plug and play with Mac and PC without the need for software driver installation or external power, and both controllers have four memory banks for programming and recalling settings appropriate to different software programs. You will see the Akai Professional LPD8 and LPK25 hit the shelves of your favorite stores by the third quarter of 2009.
