Akai MINIAK Compact Vocoding Synth: Say Hello To My Mini Friend
More big MusikMesse news: the very first synth to carry the Akai name has been announced, and it's got its vocoding crosshairs trained right on the MicroKORG XL. The Akai MINIAK is a sleek-looking, compact synth the likes of which you've seen before, but if the success of the company's recent MPK and APC controllers are any indication, Korg should be quaking in their virtual-analog boots.
Developed in conjunction with Alesis (they share a parent company), the MINIAK likely began life as the next generation of the Alesis Micron, a compact synth that never got the attention of, but in many ways was superior to, the original MicroKORG. Branded as an Akai product, the MINIAK shares name-association with the legendary MPC, a name and a concept that has continued basically unsullied for the past 20-plus years.
OK, enough about brand names. What does the MINIAK have to offer, other than the obvious gooseneck mic and MPK-derived good-looks (and keys, hopefully. . . man those were nice keys). According to Akai:
"The MINIAK enables users to create programs with up to eight multi-timbral voices, each with three oscillators. The user can create interesting and unique sounds and take advantage of the synthesizer’s more-than-600 preset sounds. Users can create complex and refined sounds using the MINIAK’s two multimode filters, three envelope generators, two LFOs, stereo effects and 40-band vocoder with gooseneck microphone. The MINIAK also has a comprehensive sequencer with step and dynamic real time phrase sequencing, a drum machine/rhythm sequencer and an arpeggiator."
Akai also plans on outfitting the MINIAK with 24-bit D-A converters for high-fidelity output and 37 semi-weighted keys. The MINIAK will also support MIDI in/out; paired with, say, an MPC1000, you'd have a full-on, Kanye- or T-Pain-approved production suite.

Availability is planned for third-quarter 2009. Pricing is still TBA.

The Miniak is not Akai's
The Miniak is not Akai's first synth. For example there were the VXs a AXs in the 80s.
Ahh, you're right.
I mis-typed. The MINIAK is Akai's first synth developed in collaboration with Alesis. My bust.
Synth-kitsch-nonproliferation act?
Yeah, right. Twenty years ago I called for a complete moratorium on new models of distortion pedals.
Stop me before I clip again.
This has got to be a hoax!
This has got to be a hoax!
umm its just a redesigned
umm its just a redesigned micron..!
Laugh
It's just an Alesis Micron with a microphone.
Compare the specs and you'll see.
But it will probably cost more because it has the Akai logo, sad!
And it's NOT "the very first synth to carry the Akai name"!!!
I can think of at least three other Akai Synths, the AX-60 AX-73 and AX-80.
How typical of GW to screw
How typical of GW to screw up such a simple fact that this isn't Akai's first synth. And on top of that, not only did the writer admit to a mistake, no correction was done. Gearwire: We don't know a thing!
Hey man!
You sound like an awesome and mature citizen! Do want to grab a beer sometime? Excuse me if this sounds a bit forward, but I feel like the more time I can spend with you, the better a person I'll become!
How will this compete against the R3?
Looking at the specs, this looks like it's aiming at the same userbase as the Korg R3 - vocoder, VA, 37 full-size keys etc. It'll be interesting to see how it gets positioned (my understanding is the R3 didn't sell as well as hoped, and I'd imagine there would have to be some really distinguishing features for the MINIAK to be a success - maybe a very attractive pricepoint, or some cool host/DAW integration features). Also, I can imagine some of the technical reviews will take issue with the polyphony restrictions - 8 voices isn't much to work with when there's multitimbrality involved.
lame
ummm...... 5 others to be exact........
ax80, ax73, ax60, vx90, vx600
i own the ax60, ax73 and vx600, and i was planning on getting the other two. now my dream of owning all of the synths made by akai has been destroyed, because I will NEVER buy this P.O.S. !
