Akai Professional MPK61: When 49 Is Too Little And 88 Seems Too Much, 61 Is The Way To Go
In reviewing the MPK series of keyboard MIDI controllers from Akai, we find at the present time three of these: the MPK25, MPK49, and the MPK88, each having its corresponding number of keys and MPC production controls. In terms of these sizes, some would say they're all at the extremes of sizes and would then ask, "Isn't there something that's in the middle? Forty-nine keys are too little for me." Give them the MPK88 and they'll complain that it's too much to handle and too bulky to transport. These people no longer need to fret as this summer's NAMM will see the introduction of the fourth member of the MPK series, the Akai Professional MPK61.
The MPK61 is the latest keyboard MIDI controller from Akai with 61 semi-weighted piano-style keys, a bank of MPC pads, assignable Q-Link controllers and some of the technologies from the icon MPC. Performers, producers, and DJs will certainly enjoy making use of its 61 keys with aftertouch, 16 MPC pads with velocity and pressure sensitivity, 72 assignable Q-Link, MPC Note Repeat, MPC Swing, as well as its arpeggiator. Split features from the MPK88 are still retained, enabling the user to divide the keyboard into zones for playing various sounds simultaneously.
Being the same control freak as its siblings, the MPK61's various controls facilitate total command over MIDI applications such as software synthesizers and will connect instantly to any Mac or PC via USB. Being MIDI compliant, the MPK61 works with virtually all MIDI recording, sequencing, and performance software in the market.
The Akai Professional MPK61 keyboard MIDI controller will become available from professional audio and musical instrument retailers around the third quarter of 2009. Introductory price for the MPK61 is still TBA.
