AKG C12 At Chicago Recording Company

In a world where Digital Audio Editing is king and compact interfaces dominate the home recording market, it can be easy to forget the basics. Chris Shepard, engineer and studio manager at the incomparable Chicago Recording Company, reminds us that the most important part of your signal chain is the beginning*. As a shining example, he removes an AKG C12 from the CRC vault for a bit of show and tell.

*It's like that Confucian adage: "even the longest journey starts with an AKG C12."

CHRIS SHEPHERD: Microphones are really the trick of the trade. Having a great microphone collection is probably the most important. Everyone has their favorite mics they like to use on certain things, but it's always fun to try new ones because that's really where you start getting your sound is right at the microphone.

We have a vault where we keep all of our microphones. They're probably our most treasured possessions here at the studio. We'd trade Pro Tools rigs for microphones any day.

The third one down here, this is a C12, and our C12 sounds excellent. It's a real good one. Once again, the old convoluted power supplies and pattern selector, but just a wonderful mic, great for acoustic guitar, some vocalists. It's a little -- you know, it can be a little sibilant on some vocals so just being careful what you place it on but on an acoustic guitar, great.

I need awesome gear... I'd like a free gear catalog!
My opinion is awesome. I'd like to take a gear survey
