AKG C 747 V11: Classic Pencil Microphone Makes A Comeback

AKG C 747 V11

The versatility of the classic pencil microphone C 747 has found its way just about anywhere from broadcast studios to lecture halls. Owing its versatility to a wide and flat frequency range, it's been used to record all kinds of musical instruments, even ones that had very low frequencies such as the contrabassoon. With an inconspicuous appearance and brilliant sound reproduction, it was the ideal overhead microphone that even solved the problem of multi-instrument crosstalk as well as picking up sounds from a great distance. As today's age presents brand new challenges, AKG decided to make this impressive microphone even better with the AKG C 747 V11.

Due to the C 747's popularity in installed sound usage (such as conference rooms), a redesign to better suit this need was at hand. In response to those annoying bigshots bringing in their cellular phones that they forget to turn off during conferences and other events, an integrated RFi shield is now part of its design. No longer will you hear those successive beeps every time a suit sends a text message to his "business" associate (whatever that is). The frequency response was also fine-tuned to optimize reproduction and recording of the spoken word while retaining that C 747 flavor.

The C 747 V11 also has an enhanced polar pattern that provides consistent off-axis rejection. This feature controls ambient noise and feedback in acoustically difficult environments to handle everything from noisy discussion groups to reverberant areas such as old places of worship. The C 747 V11's configuration even allows it to clearly pick up talkers moving around in front of the microphone despite its noise cancellation features. There's no longer an excuse to having messy conference recordings that give transcriptionists a big headache. The C 747 V11 also has a switchable LF roll-off filter to suppress mechanical noise and operates on 9 to 52 V phantom power.

The AKG C 747 V11 is not only an excellent microphone but also comes with an excellent package as well. The C 747 V11 ships with an extensive set of accessories including a shock mount/adapter, mini gooseneck, stand adapter, mounting clamp, thread link, and windscreen. Not bad for a "pencil", huh?
