Algorithmix K-Stereo Turns Molehill Mixes Into Mountainous Ones

Algorithmix K-Stereo Released

Algorithmix appears to be thinking outside the box with a software plugin that defies normal classification. They're billing K-Stereo as an Ambience Recovery Processor which adds some last-minute digital varnish to your recording.

K-Stereo allows mastering engineers to easily enhance, expand, and EQ a recording's ambience. Basically, if you think your track sounds 'small," you can beef it up by using K-Stereo to improve the definition, depth, width and space. One way that K-Stereo achieves this is through control over reverb returns or ambient mics after mixing by enhancing the shape, spread, tone and depth of the reverb, clarifying the overall sound and definition of your song.

K-Stereo also helps reduce the need for dynamic compression. It takes recordings done with multiple stereo microphone techniques and shaves off artificial "edges" between mixed-together spaces. It also helps make rough mixes sound a bit better without the need for any artificial reverb. It just improves the spread and diffusion of your current reverb to reveal instrument positioning. Algorithmix warns not to expect miracles -- just blatant improvement.

You can also build a deeper, wider soundstage and simmer down instruments and vocals that are too "in your face." Flat recordings are also given some body either subtly or extremely without sacrificing center-panned information (which happens with techniques that reduce the M to S ratio). And speaking of the devil, K-Stereo naturually converts mono to stereo by bringing out ambience in the mono source and spreading it stereophonically.

Some final benefits include its stealth -- K-Stereo should not color your sound in any way, just enhancing what's already there. It also benefits your recordings at 16-bit CD quality and even mp3 quality through a great dithering algorithm. And the one thing K-Stereo jokes is secret: it makes the sound louder while rarely causing clipping.
