Allen & Heath Zed R-16 Firewire Mixer: Firewire Walk With Us At 125th AES
There's no more gracious host than a British console manufacturer. Look at Allen & Heath: they traveled nearly halfway around the world to be and AES exhibitor, yet they still had buttered scones and hot Earl Grey waiting for us when stopped by their booth. Classy.
While there, we got to check out the Allen & Heath Zed-R16 firewire mixer in action. If you haven't gotten a chance to check out this mixer / interface, you might be surprised at the multitude of control surface functions, available I/O and internal routing options it provides.
MICHAEL PALMER: Hi. I'm Michael Palmer, national sales manager with Allen & Heath, and we welcome you all to the AES show this year. Allen & Heath is very excited about our new recording product. Everyone knows us as an analog mixer company and also a large-format digital console manufacturer for our live performance venue products. Recently, we developed a line of recording consoles for the studio musician. So, essentially what we have is an analog all-front-end, high-quality Allen & Heath mixer. However, it also combines a full surface controller for software, so we have full [SOUNDS LIKE] MIDI-writable faders; we have a MIDI encoder section on the main outputs. It allows you to all of those knobs and encoders and buttons, and essentially we can use it as a full surface controller.
We have 16 real faders. We have transport control all onboard the console and no need for all of the multiple controllers, I/O boxes, and mixers. You get all of these all combined in one.
So, at the back of the console, it incorporates 16 channels of 24/96 FireWire I/O. It also has 16 channels of ADAT I/O, a dedicated MIDI jack section on the output also. You can combine those outputs for up to 26 channels of I/O when using the FireWire and eight channels of the ADAT together, so it's very flexible.
Probably the most unique feature is the ability with the console to be able to route the digital signal inside of the mixer. Many surface controllers or mixers, they only allow you just to return that digital signal into a single path. We actually have a digital patch bay section built into the bottom of the console. It allows you to send the digital audio pre or post to the analog EQ, allows you to return the audio pre or post the EQ and also pre or post insert, so it gives you a lot of flexibility with outboard gear, with routing, and being able to use the analog parametric EQ that's onboard the console.
