Ampeg Diamond Blue Series J-20: Blasting Off With The Jet
In our last look at the Ampeg J-20 Jet, Owen O'Malley gave a basic overview of the amplifier. But as Tim "The Tool Man" Taylor would advise, we upped the power with a triple humbucker guitar blasted to 10. And then he'd do that stupid grunting thing and Zachary Ty Bryan would come home from soccer practice. Whatever happened to Zachary Ty Bryan anyway? Oh yeah, he was in that third The Fast And The Furious movie.
OWEN O'MALLEY: Okay. So now we've got a little -- our SG Special Faded; it's a three-humbucker guitar. I'm just going to keep it on the bridge humbucker right now. Now, this amp is on standby right now but I don't know if it's faulty wiring, it may be part of the original vintage spec, but even though it's on standby [OWEN STRUMS A CHORD], you can get a little bit of tone out of it, kind of that like [OWEN STRUMS A CHORD] choked dying tube sound.

And if we crank the volume, it only gets worse...
[OWEN PLAYS SOME RIFFS AND LICKS]
...or better.
[OWEN PLAYS SOME RIFFS AND LICKS]
So, let's hear what some of this cranked distortion sounds like on the J-20.
[OWEN PLAYS A COUPLE OF CHORDS]
It's real loud.
[OWEN PLAYS SOME RIFFS AND LICKS]
That's volume at three. Let's bring it up to seven. I'm going to get in trouble; I know it.
[OWEN PLAYS SOME CHORDS AT HIGHER GAIN SETTINGS]
That sounds awesome. Ten for just a sec.
[OWEN PLAYS SOME CHORDS AT HIGHEST GAIN SETTING]
Okay. That's pretty awesome-sounding distortion. Alright, let's cut this short before I get in trouble. So that's the Ampeg Jet J-20. This was reintroduced at the end of last year, 2007, and it's a pretty awesome sounding little one-channel amp. This has been Gearwire.com, I'm Owen O'Malley, and thanks for joining us.
