Ampeg SJ12T Super Jet: Cowboy Mouth's John Thomas Griffith Saves A Horse, Plays A Super Jet
The Ampeg SJ12T Super Jet is a pretty tasty tube amp for something that ends up sitting hidden behind Cowboy Mouth lead guitarist John Thomas Griffith's Marshall. He uses it in place of an effects pedal, we're guessing because of the beautiful on-board tremolo.
Watch this video to hear John talk about using the amp like one would use a pedal . . . or like one would use a stretch of desert for secret military bomb testing.
JOHN THOMAS GRIFFITH: Hi. I'm John Thomas Griffith, and I'm the lead guitarist and pianist for the band Cowboy Mouth from New Orleans, Louisiana.
What we have in the back back here -- I don't know if you could see this or not -- more around the corner here, this is our little baby right here. We have this setup. This is our little Ampeg. It's a Super Jet 12" speaker. We use it just for -- as an effect. Instead of using a pedal, I'd rather use this because it drives the air into the microphone, and I've never found a pedal to be steady as this is, so it's worth every penny.
INTERVIEWER: It's consistent.
JOHN THOMAS GRIFFITH: It's consistent. Yes it is. Yeah.
[JOHN THOMAS GRIFFITH PERFORMING]
I fell in love with that thing backstage at Red Rocks on a gig. Some guy had one backstage and was just messing around with it, and I just started playing on it. He had a smaller one; he had one with a little 10" speaker in it, and we started out with that and then we just kept blowing the speaker, so Ampeg gave us one with a 12" speaker and we love it. It's a Super Jet. Yeah.
