Ampeg SVT-VR: Michael Rhodes And Robert Trujillo Agree On Something

January 28, 2008
Ampeg SVT-VR

Look who we caught snooping around the Ampeg booth at Winter NAMM 2008! We saw Michael Rhodes, the Nashville session bassist who's laid down the bottom end for Gretchen Wilson, Brooks & Dunn, Shawn Colvin, Faith Hill, Randy Travis, Wynonna Judd, the Dixie Chicks, Reba McIntyre, Vince Gill and hundreds of other incredibly huge names, and Robert Trujillo the bassist for Metallica who also has an impressive resume consisting of Suicidal Tendencies, Jerry Cantrell, Black Label Society, and more. They were both checking out the new Ampeg SVT-VR series -- which they have both used, and the two big-name bassists had only praise for the new Ampegs.

BILL HOLLAND: Welcome back to Gearwire.Com. I'm Bill Holland, and I'm here with Michael Rhodes and Robert Trujillo, and we are talking about the new Ampeg SVT-VR. Now, you both use this. You're both Ampeg artists. What do you think of this new amp?

MICHAEL RHODES: It's -- well, I mean it's getting back to the industry standard. I mean they made these things back in the 70s and, you know, I mean and it kind of set the bar for the qualitative bass amp.

BILL HOLLAND: It's going back to basics again.

MICHAEL RHODES: Yeah. Exactly.

BILL HOLLAND: I mean there's a lot of companies doing that.

MICHAEL RHODES: Yeah.

BILL HOLLAND: Robert, what do you think of this?

ROBERT TRUJILLO: I think it's great. Actually, recently I've been doing some recording with this particular model and I love it. I'm glad it's back with a fresh, new vibrant look that gives us power and energy to be creative and to be heard. It has a voice, so I love it.

BILL HOLLAND: Awesome. And, I mean so pretty much you're using these pretty regularly, and it cut through pretty well whenever -- when you're playing it, it has a really solid tone?

ROBERT TRUJILLO: Yes.

BILL HOLLAND: I'm Bill Holland. This is the new Ampeg SVT-VR. I'm here with Robert Trujillo and Michael Rhodes, and we'll back with more from Winter NAMM 2008 in Anaheim.
