Apogee's Firewire For Mini Systems At MusikMesse
Lucas Van Der Mee is Apogee's Senior Design Engineer and a swell fellow who was happy to speak with Gearwire from the floor of MusikMesse '07 about the company's recent addition of Firewire to the Mini-Me and Mini-DAC ADDA converters. Gearwire's Rob Warmowski asks the penetrating questions: so now that the Mini-Series is expandable, just how many of the units can you run concurrently? If Lucas doesn't know, nobody will.
INTERVIEWER: Alright. Welcome to the Apogee booth at Musikmesse 2007. I'm here with Lucas Van Der Mee, senior design engineer for Apogee, a legendary manufacturer and designer of A/D converters. Welcome, Lucas.
LUCAS VAN DER MEE: Welcome. Welcome to our booth.
INTERVIEWER: We recently at Gearwire published a story about the addition of FireWire to the Mini-DACs that Apogee makes. Lucas, tell us a little bit about what went into that decision.
LUCAS VAN DER MEE: Well, actually, we were planning on doing this for quite some time, and it got a bit of delayed because you know we're a small company and had some big projects going, and we were doing some FireWire development for other products. So once that got sort of finalized, we could jump on this one and finally get a FireWire card option available for the Mini-Me.
INTERVIEWER: Go ahead and show -- go ahead and yeah, already you're on it. That's good. So, obvious benefits include expansion for some -- you know, you can stack these now. Is that correct? You have expandability?
LUCAS VAN DER MEE: Well, that's -- Yeah. One of the great -- well, what you gain is a lower latency. The FireWire is a faster connection so you have lower latency. You get 24-bit up to 96 kHz which wasn't possible with the USB 1.1 option, and another new feature is that you can have multiple Mini-Mes connected through like a hub to your computer and run them simultaneously.
INTERVIEWER: Is there any practical top end if you wanted to how many you can gang up together?
LUCAS VAN DER MEE: That's a good question. I think it's three units at the moment that are allowed to connect, so.
INTERVIEWER: Good to know. Thank you so much for talking a little bit about the FireWire.
LUCAS VAN DER MEE: Okay.
INTERVIEWER: I appreciate it.
