Applied Acoustics Systems Strum Acoustic GS-1: Strum The Keys To Be The Man Now, Dog!
Just because you've trained your fingers for the keyboard instead of advanced strumming techniques doesn't mean you can't use acoustic guitar. With Applied Acoustics Systems' Strum Acoustic GS-1, palm muting, upstrokes, downstrokes and more are available at the formation of a keyboard chord.
This intuitive software makes playing acoustic on your keyboard much more natural. Check the video out to hear the GS-1 in action.
JASON DONNELLY: Hi. This is Jason Donnelly with Gearwire.Com, Winter NAMM '08, and we're looking at Strum, and this is Philip.
PHILIP: Hi. I'm Philip from Applied Acoustics.
JASON DONNELLY: Nice to meet you. Tell us a little bit about Strum and maybe we can do a quick demonstration and show the folks what makes it so cool.
PHILIP: Okay. Strum is a synthesizer for a keyboard player who don't know how to play guitar, how to voice a chord on the guitar, or how to strum, and the strumming part, and so on. SO, you can use it a standout synthesizer like that [PHILIP PLAYS A LICK] with the hammer-on [PHILIP DEMONSTRATES HAMMER-ON SIMULATION], pull-off. You've got the bend of the string on the aftertouch [PHILIP DEMONSTRATES BEND SIMULATION], but when you begin to make chords [PHILIP PLAY A CHORD], it detects the chord you make, and if you use simple chords [PHILIP PLAY A CHORD], it uses the guitar position to strum it, and you can strum from there.
JASON DONNELLY: Anywhere you hold your fingers, it'll take the guitar's position?
PHILIP: Yes, yes. And so I can mute this part and just strum from there. [PHILIP DEMONSTRATES STRUMMING SIMULATION]. It's easy, very easy to play. And I have down-strum there, up-strum, I have the mute strum there [PHILIP DEMONSTRATES MUTING]. Okay, and you have the individual string there so [PHILIP PLAYS SOME ARPEGGIOS]. So it's really easy, yes, to make the guitar part really easy, and if you are not used to play that at the beginning, you can grab a loop there, saying "Campfire", and then it plays [PHILIP DEMONSTRATES LOOPING FUNCTION. And if you are happy with the loop, you can draw it in the sequencer, and then main function, edit a little bit in order to make it more natural.
JASON DONNELLY: So, does it have a built-in sequencer, or are you saying that you could use it like a VSTi host, or how does that work.
PHILIP: Yes. It is both Mac, PC, and all plugin formats.
JASON DONNELLY: Very cool. Is this product available now? Is it shipping now?
PHILIP: Not now. We have the sound design to do because we want, as it is, physical modeling. We can provide a lot of sounds so all standout guitar sounds, al types of acoustic guitars but banjo too, lute, every instrument which have strings and a body which is acoustic. We're trying to make a really complete library of sounds, so it will be available before the end of March at Musikmesse.
JASON DONNELLY: So there it is: the Strum Acoustic GS-1 acoustic guitar synthesizer by applied acoustic systems. That's distributed exclusively by ILIO. This is Jason Donnelly with Gearwire.Com.
