Summer NAMM 2005: Audio-Technica Drum Mic Packs

September 15, 2006
Audio-Technica Drum Mike Packs
Summer NAMM 2005: Drummers are not a microphone's best friend. All that thrashing around with the sticks requires a set of mics built like a Marine drill sergeant; rugged, mean, and practically bullet-proof. Audio-Technica walks us through two sturdy sets of Midnight Blues drum mic packs, both encased in steel with gold-plated connections. These babies are designed to withstand any abuse from a rabid percussionist. The high-end set is complemented with two stereo condenser mics, and both packs feature a nifty carrying case that slightly resembles the case for a Colt .45 automatic pistol. That little extra would surely bring a smile to the face of a crusty old drill sergeant.
Take a look at Audio-Technica's Drum Mike Packs web page for more information.

SPEAKER: Hi. These are the new Audio Technica Drum Packs. As you can see, there, it really gives you a good example on the packaging of what these microphones are supposed to be doing in terms of placement on the drums, in the kick drum, on the toms. I'll go through what each kit encompasses.

The MB/Dk4 Midnight Blues: You can see we have kind of a unique really nice looking color here with a soft final touch. It's great for if you hit the side of it, they're very strong. If you happen to hit it with a stick, the microphone's not going to break. These are all-steel surrounds; very tough. We can bang this against the wall and they won't break. These are some of the strongest microphones that we make, and I know you can't really see this but this is a pretty heavy microphone, and they're in a very hostile environment around the drummer. I myself am a drummer and I've hit many of an expensive microphone. These are great mics.

The Dk4 comes with four microphones. It comes with a kick drum -- a dedicated kick drum microphone that is geared towards low frequencies and has a bump in the bottom, and it also comes with three either tom or snare microphones. What you get with the kit is this great, great case to carry to the gig; if it gets thrown in the chalk, it's not going to get beat up, and it also comes with three snap-on clips, eliminating the need to buy expensive microphone stands, etc., make your bags smaller for the gig. These clip right on the side of the rim, they're very tough and bendable, and the kick drum microphone as well as the tom and snare mics have that.

The brother package to this is our MB 6. The MB 6 is the same three tom or snare drum microphones as well as the kick drum microphone but in addition we add these great studio condensers. The studio condensers typically would be used in a stereo XY pattern over the it, perhaps over the cymbals, etc., or you could isolate these and put one on the kit and one on the hi-hat. These are very high-quality cardiod condensers, and these also come in a great carrying case with all the clips you're going to possibly need. It makes a full kit, and that's our new drum packs.

I need awesome gear... I'd like a free gear catalog!
