One ear-training app is now available for Mac and iOS, rather than iOS devices alone. Audiofile Engineering has announced the release of Quiztones for Mac, the handy ear training application for musicians, producers, and engineers. Along with the Mac version of the app, Audiofile Engineering also released the version 1.6 update of the iOS version for iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch.

Quiztones is a useful ear training application designed to help audio professionals and musicians accomplish better mixing, recording, and live sound. If its name is any clue, the Quiztones app uses quizzes to engage users in training exercises from frequency tones to EQ boosts / cuts on pink noise, instrument loops, and songs in a user's music library. According to Audiofile Engineering, Quiztones trains the ears to recognize frequencies instantly and intuitively, providing users with the skills to better accomplish tasks such as mixing, adjusting EQ settings, and identifying and eliminating feedback.

Previously available only for iOS, Quiztones is now available for Mac and offers similar features to the iOS version. QuizTones for Mac features over 40 quizzes, but with the addition of a score log, and 1/3 octave quizzes included in the purchase price.

The app uses frequency-altered tones, noise, and musical loops to train your ears and help develop more acute listening and frequency recognition skills. Quiztones is designed to help sharpen your ears and frequency recognition skills, improve your mixing and EQ'ing chops, prevent noise buildup in your mixes and recordings, and eliminate the need to sweep for frequencies.

In addition, Quiztones for iOS has been updated to version 1.6 and now offers an Expert mode of 1/3 octave quizzes (available as in-app purchase) to challenge musicians and audio professionals of all skill levels. This new version of Quiztones for iOS also includes bass, electric guitar, strings, and orchestra content, which was previously only available via in-app purchase. Still more, version 1.6 includes a Native iPad interface to make the best use of the iPad's larger display.

Quiztones for Mac is now available at the Mac App Store for $19.99. Quiztones for iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch is available through iTunes for $4.99.
