Audix Presents The VX5 Microphone
Audix co-founder Clifford Castle shows off the Audix VX5. This hard-wired condenser mic is built for live sound reinforcement applications, featuring a patented "roll-off" feature that gives the mic an SPL rating in the 140db range. This mic will have a wireless counterpart available in 2007, so those
who love the mic but want the freedom of wireless won't have long to
wait.
JOE WALLACE: I'm Joe Wallace for Gearwire.Com. We're on the floor of AES 2006 and I'm here with one of the co-founders of Audix, Clifford Castle. How are you?
CLIFFORD CASTLE: Good, Joe. Nice to meet you.
JOE WALLACE: I wanted to ask you about the VX5. It's your newest microphone, getting ready to be integrated into your wireless line. Tell me a little bit about it.
CLIFFORD CASTLE: Alright. The VX5 is a condenser microphone. It's designed for live sound reinforcement primarily. It's got a pad and roll-off feature, which enables the microphone to hit really high sound pressure levels in excess of 140 dB, which is very difficult to accomplish with a condenser without it overloading. It's got a two-stage mesh grille screen to help eliminate pop noises. It's got some nice acoustic porting, as you can see in the middle section here, and all in all it’s a nice durable microphone with a very smooth wide frequency response, none of the harsh sibilance you would get typically with a condenser, so it's kind of got the best properties of some of our dynamics along with a condenser mic. It's really a very cool microphone.
JOE WALLACE: Now, you're getting ready to integrate this into wireless series. What does it take to do that?
CLIFFORD CASTLE: It takes blood, sweat, and tears basically, you know. No. Now we have basically make an interface. It's not too difficult, it just takes time, and we want to introduce the hard-wired version of it first and then integrate it with our wireless after the first of the year.
JOE WALLACE: Anything else we should know about the mic? When do you think it will be shipping?
CLIFFORD CASTLE: It's going to ship at the end of this month, right around the beginning of November, and you'll be seeing it out in your favorite retail stores and online, so if you have any questions aboard to get it or want to know more about it, just visit our website which is Audixusa.Com.
JOE WALLACE: Great. I've been talking with Clifford Castle, one of the co-founders of Audix, for Gearwire.Com, on the floor of AES 2006.
