Audix D6 Large Diaphragm Dynamic Microphone: Shh!! Big Brother Is Tracking
The Tristan James / Celine Zaphiratos tag-team at Proletariat Productions demos yet another Audix mic. They've already covered the D1 and D2; this time they're taking a listen to the Audix D2, again on a rack tom. The D6 has a large, passive diaphragm and a high SPL-handling, making it an excellent choice for kick drums and bass cabinets, and it's a fraction of the cost of many other similar mics.
TRISTAN JAMES: I am Tristan James. I work as an engineer and a music producer for an independent label called Proletariat Productions, try to give opportunities to independent artists who mostly do kind of political, progressive, or radical work with their music.
CELINE ZAPHIRATOS: My name is Celine Zaphiratos, and I'm an engineer here at the studio and I'm also going to be a freshman undergrad in audio arts and acoustics at Columbia.
TRISTAN JAMES: This is our A room here. We do mostly drum tracking in here, some horns if we want some space, but we have a smaller room for that that usually works a little bit better. I'm going to be kind of auditioning some of the Audix mics that we have at the studio. Here's on toms, just for comparative purposes, I've got the D6 and then we will also try out the D1 and D2 microphones.
Audix D6: a larger diaphragm on a lower frequency instrument. I'll go back to that same tom we were using so you can hear it. I assume it's probably meant to be used on a kick drum. It has a much more low end in the frequency response and it still has pretty decent rejection from behind but yeah you'll definitely hear a lot more low end with this microphone.
This is the Audix D6 on that same tom we heard earlier:
