Auralex Studiofoam Eco And Auralex EcoTec: Auralex Hugs Trees At 125th AES 2008

October 10, 2008
Auralex Eco-Friendly Initiatives

I don't know too much about carbon footprints and the like -- all I know about is leaving my size 13 bootprints up the behinds of terrorists and traitors -- but Auralex is becoming more eco-friendly with their Studiofoam Eco and EcoTec initiatives. These advancements allow petroleum-based processes to be reduced in lieu of soy-based processes, which if it keeps fake meat out of my double steakburgers, is alright with me.

The EcoTec initiative looks to replace fiberglass and foam with recycled polyester from waste like plastic bottles. As long as Auralex stays away from my prized polyester suit collection, I won't have to put my stomping boots on.

GAVIN HAVERSTICK: Hi. My name is Gavin Haverstick. I'm the lead acoustical engineer at Auralex Acoustics.

We're a manufacturer of acoustical treatment products such as absorption, diffusion, bass trapping, and construction products for isolation concerns.

What I'm here today to show you is our EcoTec product. EcoTec is not currently shipping. It's in research and development at the moment. What it is it's a substitute for typical absorption substrates like fiberglass or acoustical foam, and what it's actually made out of is recycled polyester, plastic bottles, thing similar to that, and the initial testing data that we have is that it's very similar as far as the absorption coefficients of fiberglass and it hopefully is going to be a substitute for such a substrate.

Also, with EcoTec, we have made the move with our Studiofoam Eco in order to -- instead of having a petroleum-based byproduct for polyurethane foams, we have made it a soy-based byproduct which cuts down our petroleum intake by 60%, and so all of our Studiofoam products are currently shipping this way where it's soy-based rather than petroleum.
