BC Audio Amplifier No. 7: An Ammo Can With Loads Of Tubular Firepower

July 15, 2009
BC Audio Amplifier No. 7

Most contemporary amplifier manufacturers you will find attempt to recreate all-time-favorite vintage amplifiers of yesteryears that in today's vintage-contemporary dichotomy, clones of blues breakers, JCMs, Twin Reverbs, and the like are somewhat across the landscape, tube this, tube that, yadda, yadda. Claiming uniqueness in a world of copycats and doppelgangers, BC Audio Amplifier No. 7 is about to empty both its former and present contents and aspires to shoot down the competition.

Built from an Army surplus 0.50-caliber ammunitions box, the Amplifier No. 7 could be a dangerous thing to lug along on the street, earning the attention of the Police (until they see the front panel of course). BC Audio claims that while the Amplifier No. 7's character is rooted in tweed Fender and Marshall plexis, it has its own "rock" voice. The Amplifier No. 7 has a class A power amp that has two power choices, octal preamp, and true point-to-point construction that, along with its unique enclosure, make it a very unique piece of gear that sets it apart from other amps.

With an intentional simple circuit path design, the Amplifier No. 7 does its best to keep the integrity of your guitar signal intact to allow your instrument's true voice to emerge. True point-to-point wiring avoids the use of a circuit board in the spirit of BC Audio's motto SIMPLICITY = TONALITY. Two 6SL7 octal tubes are found in the preamp section instead of the regular 12AX7s found in nearly all tube amps today to deliver a more power-amp-like tone. The power amp section uses either 6V6 tubes (15-watt configuration) or 5881 tubes (25-watt configuration) and tube changes can be done without adjusting the bias. The power supply uses a 5Y3 tube rectifier to top it off, ensuring that the Amplifier No. 7 has a voice unlike any other.

BC Audio Amplifier No. 7 is a handmade amplifier that can be at par with most boutique amplifiers, and BC audio offers a choice of either a 15-watt (1,795 USD) or 25-watt configuration (1,795 USD), a configuration with both tubes (1,850 USD)to enable you to switch between 15-watt and 25-watt configurations, as well as a bare tubeless amp (1,725 USD) which you can fit with your own choice of vacuum tubes. Being handmade, availability is on a per-order basis and prices, as written above, differ in between configurations. The Amplifier No. 7 can be ordered directly from BC Audio's website and payments can be placed via PayPal.
