Jon Philpot of Bear in Heaven may have started off as a video editor who dabbled in noise music -- a fairly niche pursuit -- but his band's latest release, ?Beast Rest Forth Mouth, is a straight-up New Order-esque gothic electro-pop epic. Owen caught up with Jon at the 2010 Pitchfork Music Festival to talk about Bear in Heaven's evolution, the recording process for their latest LP, and Jon's learning curve as musician, bandleader and DIY recording engineer.
He also talks a bit about translating the various electronic textures and synchronized elements to live performance, controlling lights with Ableton Live, and overcoming performance hiccups (aka "make like everything's fine").
