Crosstalk Black-Metal Riff-Off Has Entered Phase Two: THE JUDGING
The end is nigh.
The end of the first ever Crosstalk Black Metal Riff-Off that is! And now we hand the reigns of fate over to you, the loyal (and vociferous) Gearwire / Crosstalk audience.
Below are the top nine riffs submitted for our contest. Amongst these blood curdling riffs are three that were submitted by the Gearwire (wizard's) staff*, including Henry's riff. We're not saying which.
HA HA HA!!! Don't you see?!?!? You may be driven to cast your ballot in support of that which you so despise!! THAT IS THE POWER OF BLACK METAL!!! YOU CANNOT RESIST ITS SARDONIC WILL!!!!!
The voting commences now, and will close at MIDNIGHT, May 15th, 2008 (that's this coming Thursday). Whichever riff garners the HIGHEST AVERAGE SCORE will be deemed "The Blackest Of Riffs." The creator of the winning riff shall win a T-Shirt and a Folk Album, as detailed in the contest's rules.
Each riff will be ranked individually, judged by the masses on a scale from 1-5. We will average the results in a very metal way. We kindly ask that you vote for all nine (or as many as you can handle) or risk being impaled by the horns of Satan's army of minions.
And now, to the riffs (SKULL POLLS PROVIDED BY THE DEMONIC FORCES OF POLL DADDY):
Black Metal Riff #1
Black Metal Riff #2
Black Metal Riff #3
Black Metal Riff #4
Black Metal Riff #5
Black Metal Riff #6
Black Metal Riff #7
Black Metal Riff #8
Black Metal Riff #9
*Should a GW staffer's riff be selected as "The Blackest Of Riffs," the contest prize will still go to the highest-rated user-submitted riff. We may be subject to the will of our collective satanic ID, but we're still fair.
This topic will be bumped until voting is over because it is such a Hot Topic -- where you can go for all of your commercialized black metal t-shirt / hoodie needs!

ok. henry is retarded and
ok. henry is retarded and owen is trying too hard. we get it. crosstalk doesn't seem to care. lets stop the hating. but seriously, no one likes these guys. I don't get all the hating on here but anyone with a brain can tell that Henry and Owen are killing this program.
This is so fucking dumb!
This is so fucking dumb! Bill Holland what are your thinking!?
thanks for the feedback
we all discussed the riff-off before beginning contest, and we all were comfortable with where it was going. The whole team here did a fantastic job putting this together, and I was one of the four facilitating the contest. I appreciate your feedback, and I'll forward it on to the other guys.
bill should be fired

Oh god this contest is
Oh god this contest is retarded. I hope you guys don't get paid for this.
actually
This contest is awesome, because we've gotten three pages of comments.
yea man. maybe you should
yea man. maybe you should actually read the comments! All of them say that this contest is retarded not awesome. That is a fact. I watch crosstalk because it used to be quite good with Dan Agusto. I have a ton of friends that all agree. This current direction is so bad. You don't see people getting this mad at Dan back in ther day. Do you? Thats because crosstalk USED to be GOOD. Now it is a joke. Seriously read the stuff Owen writes or listen to the dribble that Henry speaks! It's idiocy!!! Horrible. People look to you because you seem to "get it" at least a little. My ONLY motivation for this comment is the fact that I care about this show. People are not comment here because they have nothing better to do. We are commenting because this show needs to be saved. I can love Crosstalk and hate the direction it's going. I feel the same way about America! You're beginning to look a lot like George Bush up in here! SORRY BILL!
Crosstalk past and present
On a serious note, I am really very curious.
What is different? We had to go back to an audio format because of budget and time constraints in the schedule, so I understand the frustration on that end.
We still talk about the gear the way Dan did, and really feel like we're dealing with a situation where people just can't accept change. I got thrown into the mix because I was available, and had the background knowledge to be on the show. I do not pretend to have the guitar knowledge Dan did. My background is more in live sound engineering, keyboards, and electronic music. I mean, Dan threw down metal riffs as intros, so I don't see how having a metal riff competition is really the issue here.
The crosstalk team has finally regrouped and we have our bearings now. It's a little disconcerting that so many people seem more inclined to rip the show, rather than provide new ways it could be better. I get frustrated that a fraction of our audience cannot see what we are actually dealing with here, and that we make the best out of the resources at hand.
The show as it stands is a format devoted to exploring new technology, where it impacts us as musicians, and advice on how to work within the realm of audio production. Now, we may and do present that information in a tongue-in-cheek format, but we have never wanted to be dry and uninteresting.
Again, there was some great feedback on the last podcast about gear reviews and directions that might be interesting to take with the podcast. Realize that the show can be made even better through audience participation, and that this aggression that has been present for a while is only making matters worse.
I've written it here before: give us specifics. Do not just type at your computer that you do not like Henry and Owen. That's too easy, and any idiot with a laptop and wi-fi access can do that. Explain what you do not like about the show. Even I know I say things on occasion that are not completely accurate, because I know that I am human. Help us understand what it is about the show that is different, or prove us wrong by making your own podcast and send it to me at crosstalk@gearwire.com.
