Paiste 18 Inch China Rock: A Cymbal For Playing Loud
Backstage in Belfast, Ireland Steven Spence of Miami's Black Tide took some time to tell us about various gear he favors in his drumming. High on the list are Paiste Cymbals.
"To me, Paiste make the most unique cymbals available and they're the exact sound I'm going for. My cymbals are loud, bright, heavy and they've got killer sustain. Paiste is classic!" he says.
When asked about a specific Paiste that stands out in the bunch he comes up with his Rock China.
"I love my 18" Rock China -- and it definitely 'stands out.' Way out! I have it set up far to the right and very high," says Spence. "I almost have to fully extend my arm to hit it. It's just fun."
Paiste characterizes the China Rock as a medium to heavy cymbal with a medium to loud sound and a "lively" intensity. The call the sound character -- "Bright, clear, full, aggressive." They say these cymbals are very loud / explosive with a hissing shatter. They recommend it for louder playing styles -- not for your jazz combo. The cost is around -- slightly above -- $150 generally.
Recently he also recorded a new track with his new Paiste Alpha Series cymbals and he says it sounded great.
"They are exactly what I want them to be when I need them." he says.
When asked how to choose a cymbal he is unequivocal.
"How do you decide on a cymbal? Just go with Paiste.Top of the line guaranteed! As far as mix-matching goes -- if you have to you can mix several different Paiste series but never ever go with another company! And I'm not being paid to say that!" says Spence.

Black Tide will performas part of the 2009 Kerrang tour in the UK. When they get back to the US the tour with Escape the Fate and follow that with a stint on the Warped Tour.
"We'll also be recording our next album later on this year, and we're definitely going to be stepping it up so I'm looking forward to that!" he says.
A pretty busy year all in all. Keep your eyes open for Spence and Black Tide in 2009.
