Beyond Main St and Guyville

By: Anonymous Coward
Pirate Prude (originally the debut ep title by the band, Helium) is the moniker for 26-year-old Tampa Bay singer/songwriter, Mark Freifeld. After numerous line-ups, and the lack of a dependable and consistent drummer, Mark decided to get to work on a debut record. With a plethora of songs under his belt since the late 90s, the daunting task of picking and choosing a track listing and order was at hand. Then the 'Exile' concept came to be a reality. In the history of rock n' roll, there are two classic records that continue to stand strong among critics and fans alike. "Exile on Main St" by the Rolling Stones and "Exile In Guyville" by Liz Phair. Much like Liz back in '92-93, Mark became feverishly swept up in utilizing 'Exile' as a conceptual framework for a debut album. Liz solely had Main St to go to to tailor her song structures alongside that of Mick Jagger's rugged, beatific street urchin character. Both records smack of a sense of alienation and rebellion from a community, and Pirate Prude's "Exile In Circuitville" is no different. 'Circuitville' is Mark's name for Tampa, Florida. Just as Liz described 'Guyville' (Wicker Park community of Chicago) as being overwrought with indie flannel wearing rocker dudes, 'Circuitville' is infested with dime-a-dozen homos who all wear Hollister clothes and listen to the same bland, monotonous club music. Mark has structured his 18 song journey into 'Exile' by honing in on the emotions, themes, and stories detailed in the two Exile records which came before. The intended release date for 'Circuitville' is January, 2008. Sampler cds will surface in reviewers' hands by Nov-Dec. 2007. Record labels have yet to pick up on this project, but careful consideration will be given to all parties who express an interest. BILL HOLLAND: Welcome back to Gearwire.Com. I'm Bill Holland, and I'm talking with DJ Mani from the House of Godz.

Now, we were talking about the overall purpose of the House of Godz blog, but let's talk a little bit about how you go about getting a blog account, what the purpose of it is because music blogs right now are blowing up, and obviously you're getting a lot of attention online, so let's talk a little bit about what somebody needs to do to set up this type of business operation.

DJ MANI: Well, setting up the blog is easy. Essentially, like with Blogger, or I think it's called Squarespace, almost anyone can do it within a day, but to establish the content, if you will, and get people to come to the blog is like it's a whole different story on its own, and that's where spreading the word comes in. I'll go up anywhere to anyone and just start talking about the blog. I guess that's like what being essentially a promoter is, is that you're willing to talk to anyone, anywhere, anytime about what your project is, and that is essentially what I've done to put it like two years now, so I'm constantly giving people music, I'm constantly getting people to come to the web site, constantly emailing. It's in the signature of every email that I send out.

A lot of people like when they come to the actual Blogspot, and they see that okay, he's averaging about 50 page views a day, they don't realize it that it is actually syndicated by RSS across like thousands of different places, so the viewership right now is a lot bigger than what it appears to be online.

BILL HOLLAND: Now, you're setting up the House of Godz right now as a company. Let's talk a little bit about what people need to do to set up a company and how you go about doing that.

DJ MANI: The blog came about because it was very -- the last company that I built, it really wasn't built on the most, I guess, trustworthy and honest means that you could possibly set up a company. Essentially like with my last company where we used to represent 33 people across the world, the biggest complaint was I didn't have a plan. Everyone was like, you know, was just kind flying by the seat of his pants and then did not have a plan. So this time, when I set up the House of Godz, I mean I've always seen myself as a publicist, and I read a book called "Conversations with God" which is a book by Neale Donald Walsch which essentially says that God is within each and every one of us that we are all, I guess, "messengers" or fingertips of God. So essentially, with the House of Godz, what I wanted to do was identify the 112 people, the creators if you will, that help me spread the word, all Female. So, the 112 creators are all females because females give birth and like whenever I tell anyone about my project, if I told like 90% of the guys I knew, they would argue with me or tell me I'm crazy or kind of try to discourage me whereas like the females I knew, they would -- like it's just they give birth, they nurture children, they love the idea, and they would do anything that they possibly could to encourage it along, so they're the 112 creators. And the 121 companies are essentially the companies of god and make up the House of Godz with me.
