Blue Encore 100 Vs. Shure SM57 On A Marshall 4x12 (Video)
After a few months of searching, we finally located the footage from the second half of our Blue Encore 100 v Shure SM58 et al shootout. Having already proved its mettle against the venerable SM58 (and the Audix OM2) we pit the Encore 100 against an SM57 to see which yielded the better tones on a cranked half-stack.
The Cabinet: a Marshall 1960BX 4x12 loaded with Celestion Gneenbacks. The Amplifier: a Peavey 6505+ all-tube 100-watter. The ref: your very own Owen O'Malley, who remains as biased as ever. He likes the Blue Encore 100 (probably because it's shiny), but that doesn't mean his is the final judgment. Watch this Gearwire mic shootout and make your own call.

the 100 sounds great!
I really like the 100 over the 57 in this video. I think the 100 seems to brighten up the guitar's natural range a bit more, potentially opening it up more in a mix, especially on more broken-up tones. But what about the 100i?
Thanks,

Interesting information about activation
I think this board is the proper place to ask you about the activation proccess. My link is not working properly, do you know why it is happening? http://www.gearwire.com/?61094e27dee8ef679a7358a2ea6,
Tune Up
As much as i was extremely interested in the side by side comparison, the guitar was so out of tune, it was painful to sit and listen. Next time....TUNE UP!
I think I can only say if I
I think I can only say if I like one mic's sound more than the other, because I should listen with my ears how the amp sounds live ... I think the 57 it's less phase affected in this case...though both need some equalization.
57 for me :-)

what I think
All the rhythm elements sounded better with the 57, in my opinion; clearer, and straight to the point. The lead\solo sounded nicer on the 100 as the colour lifted it and gave it a nice voice.
Split decision
While I'm personally biased towards the 100 for vocal use, I had to give this a listen. Honestly, I preferred the 100 for the clean tones only. It sounded cleaner and more alive. For the distorted/lead tones, I actually preferred the 57. Maybe because it was just simple and crisp. The 100 actually felt a bit too much and too colored (which obviously isn't always bad). So I think I prefer the 100 for cleans and 57 for dirtier sounds. (Although the 100 would still perform beautifully on either. Redundancy I know.)
