Blue Microphones Blueberry: Matt Mercado's Primo Acoustic Guitar Mic Has Antioxidants
Alright, so basketball, the climax of Independence Day and miking acoustic guitars -- one of these things is not like the other, and if you guessed miking acoustic guitars, you're correct. Matt Mercado uses his Blue Blueberry to mic some acoustic guitar, and unlike basketball and the climax of Independence Day, you do not want to aim for the hole.
Also, find out a little bit about why Matt prefers the Blueberry and how it outperforms other mics on acoustic guitar in his humble opinion.
PATRICK OGLE: You're going to mic that obviously.
MATT MERCADO: Yeah. No direct on the guitar, just straight up.
PATRICK OGLE: Now, what mic do you use on that? Any -- any...?
MATT MERCADO: We're going to use two mics; we're going to use one in the bridge and then, like on the bass, one right there, right where the neck meets the body, so probably I'm going to flip these around here.
The two mics I'm using is the -- this is the AT4050 and then I'm going to use the Blueberry.
PATRICK OGLE: Which is the one I talked to you before. This is the mic that you talked about in the written.
MATT MERCADO: Yeah. Yeah, and this is -- I really like it -- I like it on my voice. It doesn't work on every voice though so it's a little bit sibilant. I don't have a real sibilant problem so it sounds -- I like it on my voice, and I really, really like it on acoustic guitar, so I think it's one of the better acoustic guitar mics ever in a while.
We got a technique when it -- whoops -- when you're using just one mic over the shoulder. This mic would have to be turned around right there.
PATRICK OGLE: So what's like the sonic logic of that? That would have never intuitively occurred to me to do that.
MATT MERCADO: It's not quite as -- it's a little bit more natural sounding. You're not getting as much high end like if you're so close to it, but this is -- if you're just using one mic, try that, just don't aim anywhere near the hole. You want to aim here or there. If I'm going over the shoulder --
PATRICK OGLE: Even if you're over the shoulder, you don't want it aimed at the soundhole?
MATT MERCADO: You don't want to aim at the hole because that's out of box. You want to aim more towards here. I would aim more towards here with the -- and this is the diaphragm. You can kind of go a little bit lower too with it. You can put it right there. You can try that over the shoulder technique. That's a good one. The reason two mics are also so we can -- we can aim and keep one over the shoulder; it doesn’t matter. We can see how that sounds. What's going on in there is the [SOUNDS LIKE] outside --
