All About Royalties: A Chat With BMI's Phil Graham
I am a BMI songwriter. That means that when music that I have written is used on television or in film or in other areas, I get a royalty payment. The more prominent the use, and the more times that use airs, the bigger the payment.
Where does the money come from? In the case of a television show, the money paid to me comes from BMI. Where did BMI get it? They got it from the TV network or TV show producers that inserted and aired the song. These networks and producers pay a large license fee to BMI and all BMI songwriters whose music was used get a piece of that fee.
With this basic understanding, you can see how the questions just keep coming. What about radio? What about college radio? What about websites and internet radio play? Who owns BMI? What is a publisher?
