Bogner Alchemist 212 Heats Up the Mercury
J. Irving-Giles resurrects the Pointy Guitar for this no-holds-barred demo of the transformative power in the Bogner Alchemist's Mercury Channel. Our hero's stoic expression belies the energy seething through the spalted maple . . . he may just blow himself up before he even gets to the effects section.
J. IRVING-GILES: Hi. I'm J. Irving-Giles with Gearwire.Com, and I'm here with the Bogner Alchemist 212. It's a two 12" speaker combo amp with six EL6 power tubes in the class AB power section, and five 12AX7's in the preamp. The Mercury channel starts out with the very important gain control. It has treble, middle, bass EQs and volume just like you'd find in any standard amp, and then for -- it switches down here. You've got a punch switch which just gives it, gives your tone a little more clarity there, a little, well, punch, and bright switch and a mid shift switch, which obviously kinds of boosts the mids a little bit on the gain channel here.
All right. So now we're on the Mercury channel of the Bogner Alchemist. I had the EQ settings originally all at 12 o'clock but it was sounding really muddy to me. I dialed up the treble up a little bit and it gives it a lot more clarity, so we have the mid and bass at 12 o'clock, we have the treble at about 2:30, 3 o'clock. Here's the Mercury channel with none of the switches on.

All right. And let's turn the punch switch on, a little punchier sound.

All right. Now Let's brighten up the tone here.

And finally, let's shift up the mids.

All right, and that will do it for the Mercury section, and we'll go to the effects section next.

Do you you have ANYBODY
Do you you have ANYBODY there that can tune and play a guitar? Dear God....
Bring back the little Irish fella.
Bono?
Bono?
nice contextless playing. I
nice contextless playing. I wish your bosses let you do good.
Ugh...
sounded like a bunch of brown, murky mud to me...
BUUFFFF
If i were Bogner i would take you to court for this review. Amp demos should be done by people who can actually play the guitar.
This demo makes an otherwise good amp (surely) sound like pure crap, even my 10w SS kustom amp sounds better. All the blame on the guitar wannaplayer. Bogner won't sell even one based on this review.
actually...
I wouldn't say j. is a wannaplayer. he's just not a shredder. I've seen his band play before and they are really good. There are different kinds of guitarists, and he isn't a shredder by nature.
