PAUL HANSON: Hi. My name is Paul Hanson. I'm from Boss. I am showing the new RC-50 Loop Station: the most powerful looper in the world.

The RC-20, the original Loop Station from Boss has been a hit. We sold over 50,000 of them, and last night here at NAMM, the RC-50 Loop St -- the RC-20 Loop Station won an award for one of the best products for 2005. Well, the RC-20 opened a door to realtime sound-on-sound recording. The RC-50 here pretty much blows the door away.

This is a really powerful unit. It can do just about anything that you could think of. The way it works, there are 99 patches inside. Inside each patch, you have three main phrase sections, and by the way it's totally stereo too. These three main phrase sections can be run two different ways. Each patch could be set up either way. One way is called single mode; that's where you play one loop at a time like a verse and a chorus and a bridge, and the other way to run it is called multi mode: that's where we stack loops.

Let me first show you an example of single mode. I'm going to start off with the verse which I have on phrase 1, and then I'm going to go to a bridge on phrase 2, and then on phrase 3 I've got a breakdown. So here it goes.

[PAUL HANSON PERFORMING WITH THE RC-50 IN SINGLE MODE]

I'm going to go to the [SOUNDS LIKE] bridge head.

[PAUL HANSON PERFORMING WITH THE RC-50 IN SINGLE MODE]

I'll go back to the verse.

[PAUL HANSON PERFORMING WITH THE RC-50 IN SINGLE MODE]

How about to the breakdown?

[PAUL HANSON PERFORMING WITH THE RC-50 IN SINGLE MODE]

Back to the bridge.

[PAUL HANSON PERFORMING WITH THE RC-50 IN SINGLE MODE]

So there I'm switching between different parts and creating my own arrangement in real time. Realtime sound on sound. I can also overdub and record as I was doing that.

The other mode you can run the RC-50 in is Multi mode, and that's where you fly in parts as you're playing. So I've got a song over here, and then there's a drum loop on phrase 1, and let's see. I've just selected it, drum loop on phrase 1, here it goes.

[PAUL HANSON PERFORMING WITH THE RC-50 IN SINGLE MODE]

There's a drum loop. I can play along with that.

[PAUL HANSON PERFORMING WITH THE RC-50 IN MULTI MODE]

I've got a guitar harmony part on the second loop.

[PAUL HANSON PERFORMING WITH THE RC-50 IN MULTI MODE]

I can stop the drums when I want.

[PAUL HANSON PERFORMING WITH THE RC-50 IN MULTI MODE]

Three, four --

[PAUL HANSON PERFORMING WITH THE RC-50 IN MULTI MODE]

Inside the RC-50 also a mic preamp with phantom power, so you can be a guitar player and a DJ at the same to if you wanted to.

[PAUL HANSON PERFORMING WITH THE RC-50 IN MULTI MODE]

So yeah, I just recorded that.

[PAUL HANSON PERFORMING WITH THE RC-50 IN MULTI MODE]

So there's an example of multi mode where you're flying in different parts as you're playing.

So the RC-50 also has separate outputs, so you if you're able to, you have a drum loop on phrase 1, you could send that to the PA, and your guitar loop on phrase 2, you could send that to a guitar amp. You also have USB, and it works just like a digital camera. You plug it into your PC or your Mac, and instead of loading and unloading pictures, you just drag wave files in and out, and it works very easy, and that's how I got these loops in here that I'm playing along with. There's a rhythm guy with over 170 different drum parts that you can play along too. It will automatically time stretch your loops if you want. You've got several loops that are different tempos. It will automatically time stretch them if you want. You don't have to time stretch them. Any one of the phrases also could be a one shot that's where it's triggered just like a sample, and there's a lot more stuff too I'm not even -- I haven’t even mentioned. Tons of inputs and outputs. You know, if you can hook it up to a sequencer and it will follow your sequencer, like a computer based sequencer, you can also several RC-50 together. There's pretty close to 15 minutes of internal recording time here in here in mono and then 24 seconds then in stereo -- 24 minutes in stereo compared to the original Loop Station which has 16 minutes.

This is the RC-50 Loop Station: The coolest looper ever made from Boss.
