BTE Audio BEQ3: For British Ears Only
June 04, 2008
Staying true to British form, BTE Audio's BEQ3 is a British Console "Equaliser" Algorithm. The BEQ3 goes beyond just trading a "z" for an "s" to mark it's Anglophilia; it also chases the sound of discrete class AB amp modules popular in early 1970s British consoles.
The sonic qualities aimed for by the BEQ3 algorithm include a tight, balanced low end; wide and smooth mid range; and a warm high end with a little bit of sparkle to it. BEQ3 aims for these in the digital realm thanks to meticulously designed topology.
The BEQ3 algorithm also features four bands, a high pass filter and a low pass filter. Here are the specs on each:
- High Pass Filter: 18dB per octave slope with five selectable cutoff frequencies: 27Hz, 47Hz, 82Hz, 150Hz and 270Hz
- Low Pass Filter: 18dB per octave slope with five selectable cutoff frequencies: 3.9kHz, 5.6kHz, 8.2kHz, 12kHz and 18kHz
- Low Frequency Shelving/Peaking: Selectable filter type: Shelving or Peaking. Five selectable center frequencies: 33Hz, 56Hz, 100Hz, 180Hz and 330Hz. The amount of boost or attenuation is continuously variable from -18 dB to 18 dB
- Low Mid Frequency Peaking: Selectable 'High Q' or 'Low Q'. Ten selectable center frequencies: 220Hz, 270Hz, 330Hz, 390Hz, 470Hz, 560Hz, 680Hz, 820Hz, 1000Hz and 1200Hz. The amount of boost is continuously variable from 0 dB to 18 dB with 'High Q' and from 0 dB to 12 dB with 'Low Q'. And the amount of attenuation is continuously variable from 0 dB to -18 dB with 'High Q' and from 0 dB to -12 dB with 'Low Q'
- High Mid Frequency Peaking: Selectable 'High Q' or 'Low Q'. Ten selectable center frequencies: 1.5kHz, 1.8kHz, 2.2kHz, 2.7kHz, 3.3kHz, 3.9kHz, 4.7kHz, 5.6kHz, 6.8kHz and 8.2kHz.
- High Frequency Shelving/Peaking: Selectable filter type: Shelving or Peaking. Five selectable center frequencies: 3.3kHz, 4.7kHz, 6.8kHz, 10kHz and 15kHz. The amount of boost or attenuation is continuously variable from -18 dB to 18 dB
And finally, fast features:
- Extremely High Processing Efficiency
- Supports sampling frequencies up to 384 kHz
- Clickless parameter update
- Proprietary topology which is optimized for low latency, low noise and high dynamic range
- Supports both 32 bit (single precision) and 64 bit (double precision) floating-point processing
- Built-in reference-quality upsampling algorithm which can be enabled at sampling frequencies 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz to achieve bell shape symmetry at high frequencies
- Clearly and concisely implemented in pure C++: portable to any platform that is supported by a C++ compiler
