Buffet Flute: Black Tape For A Blue Girl's Lisa Feuer Talks Flute
It's not too often we get to interview flautists, so we were willing to learn when Lisa Feuer from Black Tape For A Blue Girl talked to us about her Buffet Flute. The Buffet has a conical mouthpiece, which separates it from other flutes and gets Lisa the tone she desires.
Check out the video to learn more about the flute unless you're some kind of fluting expert, in which case you should check it out anyway.
[LISA FEUER PERFORMING]
LISA FEUER: I'm Lisa Feuer and I play flute.
PATRICK OGLE: For?
LISA FEUER: Black Tape for a Blue Girl.
PATRICK OGLE: Okay. What kind of flute do you use?
LISA FEUER: It's a Buffet flute in fact.
PATRICK OGLE: I know nothing about flutes. Tell me about the flute.
LISA FEUER: Well, the thing that's different about the Buffet flute as opposed to other flutes is that the mouthpiece is slightly conical instead of just cylindrical, and I find that I like the sound that it gets.
PATRICK OGLE: And how long have you had this flute?
LISA FEUER: I got it in college so 10 years.
PATRICK OGLE: Oh okay. I was just saying that you didn't have to say that if you didn't want to date yourself.
LISA FEUER: That's okay. I also -- I have a -- oh wait, no. It's more than 10 years [LAUGHS]! It's like twice that. I have a Barcus Berry pickup but I don't use it for Black Tape. I have used it when I performed with Human Drama.
PATRICK OGLE: And what's the hardest thing playing live playing the flute? What's the most challenging thing you run into?
LISA FEUER: Playing live, it's hearing myself in the mix.
PATRICK OGLE: Other frequencies drown you out?
LISA FEUER: Yeah, and sometimes I get feedback loops as well.
PATRICK OGLE: Okay. Well, that's cool. Thanks.
