Calrec Artemis: The Mistress Of The Hunt In Broadcast Quality

August 10, 2009
Calrec Artemis

The issue of economy of space combined with high power and capability has been a predominant force in the development of today's music and professional audio technology. The Calrec Artemis, a small high-powered audio console that will be unveiled at IBC 2009 by Calrec, is one of those exemplary devices that take this trend into the realm of broadcast audio.

The Artemis relies heavy on the Calrec's proprietary technologies, Bluefin2 for processing and Hydra2 for routing, for its impressive capabilities. Bluefin2 is the successor to the Bluefin High Density Signal platform that runs at 48 kHz and provides 640 channel processing paths, 128 program buses, 64 IFB/track outputs, and 32 auxiliaries to Artemis. Hydra2, on the other hand, makes use of 8192 x 8192 crosspoint routers. The routers can be used standalone or connected to form larger networks. Hydra2 also covers a variety of I/O units such as analog, AES, MADI, SDI, and Dolby® E formats, all of which can be fitted with GPIO cards and can use both copper and fiber connectivity.

Each channel in Artemis has more than 70 minutes of assignable delay, a second compressor/limiter, and three independent APFL systems. Each facility in the system has exclusive independent resource, making each system efficient and available to the user at all times.

The control surface of Artemis features a combination of OLED displays, touch screens, and light-emitting knobs for instant visual feedback given any external lighting condition. As a standard feature among all Calrec consoles, the Artemis has full ic hot-swap redundancy for all DSPs, control processors, routers, power supplies, and connections.

Pricing for the Calrec Artemis is still TBA.
