Carlo Robelli Bass And Hartke Kickback 12: Before Dawn's Bass Gear

April 28, 2008
Carlo Robelli, Hartke

Because Before Dawn's primary objective at live shows is to get people up out of their seats and into movement, bass undoubtedly plays an integral role in accomplishing just that. It's surprising, then, to see that Kate Houle is just plugging into a Hartke Kickback 12 with a Carlo Robelli bass guitar.

You can't argue with results!

PATRICK OGLE: Here it is. Before Dawn. Drowning.

What kind of bass do you play?

KATE HOULE: My bass is incredibly generic but it sounds incredibly good. It's a Carlo Robelli which is like Sam Ash's brand, and I got it for my 21st birthday, which is about when I started playing bass. I started showing an interest in it then, and so this is my first bass and is pretty much the only one I've ever really played, and it sounds really good, and I'm a small person, I have really small hands, and it works well. It has a small neck and it's pretty light, and so I got this and I got that amp for my birthday.

PATRICK OGLE: It's a Hartke?

KATE HOULE: Mmm hmm.

ROB HOULE: Kickback 12.

KATE HOULE: Kickback 12. Yeah. My parents got them for me. I think my mom was pretty excited about me playing bass. She thought that was kind of bad ass. The other bass that I had was my dad's, and he just gave it to me, and it's been in one of his bandmate's like basement dens for the past 10 years, and since I've been playing at shows and made my album and all of that, he asked me if I liked it and I said yes and it is a 1965 Mosrite. It's The Ventures model and it says "The Ventures" on the headstock and I hadn't really started playing it yet because it needs some work done to it. It's in pretty good shape but it's -- there's a few dead sports that I need...

PATRICK OGLE: Some adjustments.

KATE HOULE: ...some adjustments made on, and it's a pretty heavy bass.

PATRICK OGLE: Mmm hmm.

KATE HOULE: But in the 60s, the Mosrite was definitely top of the line bass even though it's a company that doesn't really exist anymore that they sold it to someone.

I need awesome gear... I'd like a free gear catalog!
My opinion is awesome. I'd like to take a gear survey
