Carvin VT16 Micro Head Joins Vintage Series Of Amps

August 18, 2011
Carvin announced the VT16 Vintage Series micro head, a compact amplifier head with an all-tube design.

Just added to the Vintage Series of amplifiers, the Carvin VT16 micro head puts all the features of Carvin's Vintage 16 combo in a compact, head-only version. According to the manufacturer, the VT16 is the low-wattage, "boutique" recording tube amp that so many players are looking for -- everything about this little amp oozes tone.

The VT16's all-tube design incorporates 12AX7 preamp and two EL84 output tubes, and it boasts several important front controls and modes. The Class A/B power amp in its normal Pentode mode puts out a crisp 16W, while Triode mode produces 5W of "sweet spongy harmonics" ideal for both miked recording and small stage rigs. The Soak control goes from stout clean tones with rich midrange body to a filling upper-midrange snarl, defining its tweed sound.

Overall, the new micro head offers a wide bass, mid, and treble control range, combined with classic long-tail reverb, with a selectable 8 ohm / 16 ohm impedance switch and silent mode for line-out operation. Made to last, the VT16 is housed in a high-quality plywood enclosure covered in vintage tweed.

If you would prefer a stacked setup, the VT16 is also available in two mini-stack versions: the VT16-112 and VT16-212. These mini-stacks feature the VT16 head, combined with the 1 x 12" 112E cabinet, or the 2 x 12" 212E cabinet.

I just love a lot of great vintage amps. They are so good to play with. The quality is still there. This is what you want.

Everything about the VT16's all-tube oozes quality and tone, it looks like the perfect tool for the quality-junkie musician for jam sessions and recording sessions too. The only thing that worries me is that just like all tube amps, the lamps have a limited lifetime and will eventually have to be replaced, and they're quite pricy too.
