Casio DG-20: Somewhere Between A Guitar And A Guitar Hero Controller

November 29, 2007
Casio MIDI Guitar

Mike Conroy of Fiendo has a collection of some really odd equipment including this Casio DG-20. Fretting down and playing sends MIDI information to create the desired note rather than detect a note as a MIDI pickup would do, making this guitar more like a keyboard than anything else.

The best part about it, though, is that it looks like what people from the past thought guitars would look like in the future.

Visit Casio's official website here for more information.

Hey I was wondering where I might be able to find a Casio DG-20 guitar. I think that it would be a really fun instrument to mess around with. Thank you very much for your time.

woodburner - I'd buy your dg20 for £150 if it's in good condition (ie. if it works!).

PATRICK OGLE: [INDISCERNIBLE]

MIKE CONROY: Can you remember this?

PATRICK OGLE: Yeah.

MIKE CONROY: This works on the same principle whereas a MIDI guitar what ti does is has a pickup that actually tries to figure out what the pitch is so it listens to is whereas this it's just -- it's a connection, so it just knows okay that sixth string third fret it's a G.

PATRICK OGLE: You should plug that in. Is that in working order?

MIKE CONROY: Okay. Yeah.

PATRICK OGLE: Pretty unique with cheesy sound.

MIKE CONROY: Oh, for sure but the beauty of this thing is that--

PATRICK OGLE: Nobody's decided to like model this for like some synthesizer sounds so...

MIKE CONROY: [LAUGHS] No. I don't think that's going to happen.

PATRICK OGLE: ...because it sounds so funky, you know.

[MIKE CONROY PLAYING A CASIO DG-20]

PATRICK OGLE: That's good. Let's just turn the volume [SOUNDS LIKE] down a bit. [INDISCERNIBLE] It's amazing

MIKE CONROY: What's that?

PATRICK OGLE: I didn't have to turn the volume down on this camera until right now

MIKE CONROY: This is actually touch sensitive so that the frets will not -- when you pull on this a little, you know, it pulls on a little switch down here, and then it registers where -- which fret it's being touched on. It's programmed to play the note. You can play drums too [LAUGHS].

I need awesome gear... I'd like a free gear catalog!
My opinion is awesome. I'd like to take a gear survey
