Rare Custom Fender Stratocaster

June 06, 2007
Dave's reproduces classic and rare seafoam green strat
This is part two of our chat with the Dave's Guitars folks at the 2007 Chicago Guitar Show. Dave's Guitars shows off their a prized posession - a rare Taos Turqoise Stratocaster. It may look like "seafoam green" but the color is indeed Taos turquoise. Dave's hooked up with the Fender custom shop to recreate this classic look, but here is the original in all it's lovely worn glory. Only a handful of these particular Fender Strats were made, and its hard to think that someone out there simply got rid of one! The Gearwire team compared both the reissue and the original, and were hard-pressed to find a difference beyond the personalized wear and tear. See this rarity in our exclusive video shot at the 2007 Chicago Guitar Show.

[ROB WARMOWSKI PLAYING GUITAR]

ROB WARMOWSKI: So the '57s on the left here and it's got more dings, more damage, no doubt about it. I mean fretboard wear rather, not damage per se but it's still a beautiful instrument. And the one to the right of it, tell me the story of the one to the right of it.

TIM MULLALLY: Well, we had our -- Dave Rogers, the owner of the shop, commissioned Fender to build 25 of those as an anniversary deal for the shop. This summer will be the 25th anniversary of the store being open, and we though it would be cool if we had a run of them done to match the first guitar that he ever bought to put in his collection, which would be the green Strat in the middle, so that's kind of what we did.

ROB WARMOWSKI: Interesting. What does it take to get the Fender Custom Shop to take an order like that?

TIM MULLALLY: [GIGGLING] A log of arm twisting in some cases, but it's -- We have a good relationship with our Fender guys. They treat us well and vice versa, so we do some really nice things with them, so this is one of them.

ROB WARMOWSKI: And just -- I'm sure people are wondering. How long does it take to get 25 custom guitars built like that?

TIM MULLALLY: Well, we had the first run of 12 delivered about a month and a half ago and the others will be up shortly. Yeah.

ROB WARMOWSKI: Have you played both of these?

TIM MULLALLY: I have been fortunate enough to play both of them. Yeah.

ROB WARMOWSKI: Which one do you prefer tone-wise?

TIM MULLALLY: Oh, probably the real one just because that wood is dried out. It's just so dried out and brittle it's really nice. Really it's there; you can't describe it except that if you 'd be lucky enough to pick them up.

ROB WARMOWSKI: Well the wood has definitely shrunk away from the paint job. We can see that.

TIM MULLALLY: Yeah. It's been loved and abused but its original wear along the way so it is what it is.

ROB WARMOWSKI: Oh they're both beautiful, and thanks a lot for showing us.

TIM MULLALLY: Oh, you're welcome.

ROB WARMOWSKI: This is Gearwire.Com.
