CME UF 50 And Waldorf Nano: The CME Stands Alone

June 30, 2008
CME Soundcard Installation

Bill Holland has more than a few screws loose in this video as he opens up the CME UF 50 controller keyboard for some surgery. If the surgery is a success, the implanted Waldorf Nano soundcard will give the CME controller the ability to act as a standalone keyboard.

If the surgery fails, however, Bill's medical license will be revoked, and he'll have to resort to being an actor -- possibly a stand-in for the Blue Man Group.

BILL HOLLAND: Hi everybody. Welcome back to Gearwire.Com. I'mlooking at the UF50 CME keyboard. This is a really cool computer controller. You can use it to control Logic, Ableton, any sort of DAW that you're working in or softsynth. You can also slip in a cartridge or a module that will allow you to turn this into a standalone synthesizer. In this case, I'm going to show you how to dump the Nano Waldorf synth in here and how to use it by itself, and then we're going to take a look at some of the controls and ways that you can use this as a live controller.

Okay, so here you'll see I got this cover that comes here. There are six screws holding it in place. You're just going to take that off and make sure all your screws are in a safe place. They provide a bag for that here. Now, you'll notice that where they put together the circuit board and the plate that holds it into place. They provide two screws in a bag that you use to attach the circuit board to this, and you'll attach it to the side that says output and headphone jack. So, however, I've noticed they provided some punch out holes in case you buy another catridge and you can put two boards for one synthesizer. The one I'm not sure of is how you would do that with the cabling, so let's take a look at that.

These are the cables that came out when I removed the cover, and here's my board, so I'm just going to attach the little one right up here, make sure he's in there nice and tight, you'll hear a snapping sound, and my big one down here.

All right, now we're ready to install the card. Just put it right in here, and I can go about screwing this in. Now notice that the rest of the keyboard has no output on it for audio. There's a pedal A, pedal B, MIDI out, breath controller, and a USB connector but no audio so really this is the only way to get any sort of audio coming in and out of the synth. All right so let's check this out.
