CME VX8 Has a Full 88 Kinds of Goodness
Mike from Agency of Spirits got his fancy new CME VX8 thinking he could dive right into its big, red 88-key fantasticality with no delay. He was wrong. He had problems getting it to work with Pro Tools, and even though it was apparently a common problem, Mike was much relieved when all the bugs were squashed and he could orchestrate at will.
MIKE: Hey. This is Mike from Agency of Spirits. This is basically just a MIDI keyboard. It doesn't go. There's nothing built into it but it's an 88 note. It's the VX8 by CME and it's exactly what it looks like. It's just an 88-note keyboard. It's got all of the transport button on there, and it hooks under Pro Tools so I can use it to control it from there instead of having to stretch.
It's a nice little toy. It's got some bugs, I mean it took a while for me to get it working with Pro Tools and I actually still haven't installed the software by I didn't have a problem downloading it.
PATRICK OGLE: What are some of the bugs?
MIKE: It's just that it was working with other sequencers. I mean Pro Tools is notorious for being a little bit more difficult to work to work than something like Cubase or Logic, and then because it's an RTAS, and I don't know if you've -- the formats. You get the RTAS format, and this is like I don't know why it took a while for them to get this one going but now they finally did, but it still was a good MIDI keyboard so I bought it anyway and I just figured out I'll just wait and then come around, and sure enough now they finally came out with the correct software, the firmware rather.
Eighty-eight notes, you know, you can split up so I can control different synthesizers and stuff with it in the computer because now, if you look over here, you'll see that these are they're all synthesizers, samplers, whatever, and this can control all of that but I really don't use that anymore. It's all software based now.
PATRICK OGLE: [INDISCERNIBLE]
MIKE: It's amazing what they got but this thing can drive it all. It's got, I mean it's got the drum -- I got my drum synthesizers, it's got drum pads on it. I mean I've got other things to do that but I think the transport controls are the most important to me because -- I mean they've got like sliders for like volume or whatever that kind of like sync up to that stuff, and they're motorized so it's kind of nice. It's like I can just sit there and face that way versus having to turn around. It's just it cuts down the workflow. The main reason I got one with the 88 notes is because you can see I've got this one. It's a lot smaller. I think this is a 60 -- a 64. It's just that I needed something big because now I'm using a lot of instrument that really needed an 88-note.
