Clavia Nord Electro: The Dream Synth Of Ryland Blackinton Of Cobra Starship
In the final piece of our interview with Ryland and Alex from Cobra Starship, Ryland talks about his dream synth, the Clavia Nord Electro, and its capability to model pretty much every classic keyboard well. Bassist Alex Suarez talks about how he has no dream bass - maybe a custom job would suit him best.
Watch the video to see the coolest way yet to end an interview, and support Cobra Starship. Viva La Cobra! drops on October 23rd.
BILL HOLLAND: Again, back to the dream gear thing: Synthesizers. What do you want.
RYLAND BLACKINTON: I really want a Nord. I want an Electro or a Lead. I feel like for tour they're the most like they're versatile keyboards. They have the best Rhodes emulation, they have the best Wurlitzer emulation, and the organs, B3, all of it, it can do everything that I feel like I would like to be able to do.
ALEX SUAREZ: I don't know. I don't know what my dream keyboard would be. I really, actually for touring stuff like that, I could love to get a computer rig and use Reason live. I haven't really picked up my dream keyboard yet. I'm not a massive keys guy.
BILL HOLLAND: I know. I picked up on that. Do you have bass you want.
ALEX SUAREZ: No.
BILL HOLLAND: Just the --
ALEX SUAREZ: Because I've been looking lately, and there's no bass that I want. Nothing tickles me right.
RYLAND BLACKINTON: There's -- but you also -- a lot of times you want like a body shape like but like...
ALEX SUAREZ: Yeah.
RYLAND BLACKINTON: ...at the end of the day, it's not the best bass. You know what I mean? Like you wanted to --
ALEX SUAREZ: Yeah. Like I was like I wanted to get a Gibson Ripper, right?
RYLAND BLACKINTON: Yeah.
ALEX SUAREZ: But then you said, "Dude, it's going to kill your shoulder." I was like, "You're right. You know what, I don't want a Gibson Ripper."
RYLAND BLACKINTON: Or Phantom. You should get a Phantom bass.
ALEX SUAREZ: Yeah.
RYLAND BLACKINTON: And then it was just like it doesn't make sense though. You know what I mean?
ALEX SUAREZ: I'd rather. I'm for bass because like I'm normally a guitar player but I mean like I'm fully dedicated but for bass I just want to get something that looks cool. That's it.
BILL HOLLAND: Okay. Well thanks, I was around, for joining me today.
RYLAND BLACKINTON: Yeah. Thanks for having us.
ALEX SUAREZ: Yeah.
BILL HOLLAND: If they want to check out the new album, when's it coming out?
RYLAND BLACKINTON: Well, it's coming out October 23rd. It's called Viva La Cobra, or they can go to CobraStarship.Com or myspace.com/cobrastarship if they want to pre-order the record or look at some -- we got a lot of new web content of us goofing around, being us.
ALEX SUAREZ: Being guys.
RYLAND BLACKINTON: Being guys.
ALEX SUAREZ: Doing stuff and that.
BILL HOLLAND: Awesome. Thank you. Well thanks for joining me at Gearwire.Com. I'm here with Cobra Starship in New York.

ALEX SUAREZ: [LAUGHS]
BILL HOLLAND: All right.
RYLAND BLACKINTON: There you have it.
BILL HOLLAND: Thank you.
