Cockos Reaper 3: DAWn't Fear It
What Cockos hath sewn, thou shalt reap. Sound creepy enough? Well forgive me if the program icon for Cockos Reaper 3 puts me in a Gothic state of mind. Ye Olde Scythe of Death stands in stark contrast, however, to some decidedly non-grim news: Reaper has received a major update, but is still totally affordable.
Yes, once a name oft reverberated 'bout the hallowed bandwidth of these fair servers, "Reaper" shall be cried anew, thanks to the recent release of Reaper 3. Version three flaunts so many rad new features, it'd turn Rob Warmowski into Weaper version three:

All these improvements, yet Reaper 3 still features Cockos's intelligent and more-than-fair pricing structure. The 30-day trial version of Reaper is fully functional, with now features limited or omitted. After 30 days, should you fall in love with Reaper, you can purchase one of two licenses. A full commercial license costs $225 US, but even more affordable still is the "discounted license." If you are ". . . an individual, using REAPER only for personal use. . . an individual or business, using REAPER for commercial use, and the yearly gross revenue does not exceed USD $20,000. . . an educational or non-profit organization," you can purchase a legal Reaper license for only $60 US. Sweet.
Cockos Reaper 3 is available now, and supports both Windows- and Mac OS X-based machines.

Bought it yesterday
I've been a Cubase user for years and tried different daws. But this app is one of the most inspiring pieces of software i ever worked with. Easy to start, but very deep. The biggest shortcoming so far was the midi editing. This is no longer the case. Just an awesome app.
Reaper rocks
After using just about every music production environment from tracker programs to Ableton Live, I can honestly say that REAPER is the best.
If you're sick of bloated, over-priced, marketing-driven apps.... or if you're just not comfortable with your DAW.... or if you're stuck in a creative wasteland - you HAVE to try REAPER.
No - I don't work for Cockos! I'm just a genuinely happy REAPER convert who has just thrown his copy of Ableton out of the window for the loop-obsessed kiddie brigade to fight over.
REAPER seems to be best
Anonymous Monkey is right. After using Cubase SX 3(which doesn't sound is a daw should), Samplitude (which sounds but crashes on millions of plugs), Sonar (which has midi note off issues and can't deal with omnisphere) I've just transported a project from crackling Sonar to Reaper, where it's just half of the Cpu load, doesn't glitch and crackle at a better latency rate. I can't believe it. And it hasn't crashed yet.
So at least try Reaper 3.161 and be happy.
Reaper
after Sonar released 8 and 8.5, i was having many issues with the new cakewalk software. so i went on a search for a new DAW to host Reason.. having pretty much tried them all at one point or another (Cubase, FL, Live, Acid) and since i no longer own an mbox, pro tools wasnt an option, i came across Reaper.. i had heard of it before but as the standard software in the Neko/Miko demos on youtube. i wasnt aware it was available for the PC. Im almost glad ive had these issues with Sonar becausei thourouhgly enjoyed it till now.. IMo Reaper just sounds better and after a tricky routing process i learned from youtube.. im impressed.. getting used to all the right-clicking in this program and the piano roll... but i love it.. when my demo expires i intend on buying it...
Reaper Rocks
Have used many DAWs, and to cut to the chase, this one is the best ever! Even surpasses Adobe Audition as far as ease of use, layout, and reliability. Purchased this a while ago, price is very reasonable, and well worth the price for a license. Works great, without all the unnecessary bloat.
Reaper
Also ich habe auch alle DAW´s ausprobiert.
Genauer gesagt Cubase 5,Sonar 8,Ableton 8,
Sony Acid 7pro,Samplitude 11,Nuendo,
aber REAPER ist die Spitze.Sehr schnelles Programm.
Kein Crash,sauberer Klang,durchsichtig auggebaut,
wenn man sich eingearbeitet hat, kann man auch sehr
viele Noten reichlich verdrehen ohne Crash.
Nach 1 Stunde test habe ich es gekauft und kann es nur weiterempfehlen.
