The Gibson Hummingbird Vs. Guild GAD-50: Acoustic Battle Royale

May 25, 2007
Guitar Comparison: Gibson Hummingbird vs. Guild GAD 50
Is this any kind of a fair comparison? The Gibson Hummingbird is a reproduction of a classic Gibson acoustic from the sixties. Solid construction, collectibility and a good range are some of its outstanding features. Gearwire's Patrick Ogle puts it up against the Guild GAD-50, which costs roughly a third of the Hummingbird's list price. Listen for yourself as Ogle puts both models through the paces.

Learn more about these models at the Hummingbird and GAD-50 pages at Gibson and Guild.

that juggling was the most exciting part... held my breadth. maybe if two of you teamed up we could have heard the difference between the sound of the two gitars.

You should see the part where I ACTUALLY juggled the two guitars and a chainsaw...regretably they had to edit that part out for insurance reasons.

PATRICK OGLE: I'm going to do a very unfair comparison between a guitar that lists at over $3,500 and one that lists at about $899, and that's to repeat the list price on the guitar is not what you should pay for. If you pay a list price, you should go to your doctor and some of the rocks removed from your head. That's, I don't know, that's so you feel that you're getting a deal when you're going to the music shop. You know they say that, "This guitar lists at $2,500 or $3,500," and you should walk out probably between 20% to a third off the list roughly. I mean it's going to bury. I mean I'm talking acoustic guitars here. I'm not talking every piece of musical gear.

The Hummingbird, this particular Hummingbird. I'm assuming if you're buying a new one that you're going to get this, you can smell the lacquer on it. If this guitar is handmade, it was made, you know, fairly recently and it sounds really good and it's going to sound better. It's really a strongly braced guitar. I mean you look inside and it looks like a model ship. I mean it's put together really well I mean and so [PATRICK OGLE STRUMS A CHORD ON THE GIBSON HUMMINGBIRD] you can hear it's got -- it's kind of a dark-sounding guitar but also you can hear it has a high end and a mid too so it's not just like thunk low end, but again you're going to go $2,500 for this guitar [PATRICK OGLE STRUMS A CHORD PROGRESSION ON THE GIBSON HUMMINGBIRD]. You're going to be worrying about whether you scratch the crap out of it, [PATRICK OGLE STRUMS A CHORD ON THE GIBSON HUMMINGBIRD]but it is a really beautiful guitar. It's a collectible guitar. I think this guitar is going to be worth more down the road, so keep that in mind.

But as far as just playing that guitar and this guitar, which is the Guild GAD-50, they compare -- the comparison really isn't -- don't try that at home. Don't, you know, juggle expensive guitars. The GAD-50 compares, I think, favorably to the Gibson Hummingbird. [PATRICK OGLE STRUMS A CHORD ON THE GUILD GAD-50] It's brighter. [PATRICK OGLE STRUMS A CHORD PROGRESSION ON THE GUILD GAD-50] A guess would be this is pretty much what you're going to get with this guitar. I don't know that it's going to sound fantastic 10 years down the road. It's going to -- I mean I can't say that for sure but I don't -- It's not -- It's a lighter guitar. It's braced differently. The wood's beautiful, and they're both made out of really good sounding wood, but this guitar, you know the body shape. The body's a tiny bit different, tiny bit of a different cut.

I don't know if I'm using the right terminology there, but it's a much brighter guitar, but when you're talking about the difference in price, especially for people on a budget, you're not taking such a huge step down from the Hummingbird to this guitar as far as sound goes. I don't know. Again, the way I think is that you have a deeper sounding guitar is better when it's a guy up on stage by himself of with minimal instrumentation, and a brighter guitar [PATRICK OGLE STRUMS A CHORD ON THE GUILD GAD-50] I think kinds of cut through the business. I've talked to a couple of people who do like hard rock and acoustic stuff and they tend to confirm my belief, or whether or not is going to agree, so this guitar I think is a really good one if you're going to play with a band and if you don't have tons of money, plunk down the money for this one and then leave this one on your wishlist.
