Crosstalk 50: We've Got A T-Bone To Pick

August 29, 2008
Crosstalk 50 Full Episode

This, the 50th episode of Crosstalk, is stuffed to the brim with tasty technical tidbits. We answer listener mail about field recorders and VST hosts, wonder why travel guitars have to be so ugly, give the new John Cougar Mellencamp album a spin, and even pick the brain of an engineer at one of the most respected mastering houses in the industry.

Surely, this glut of content can't be healthy. Surely, you'll be heading to the gym directly after listening to shed those extra pounds of audio knowledge. Surely, our Muse Receptor will arrive in time for the taping of Crosstalk 51?!?!?!

Oh snap, I almost forgot: you should listen to more Crosstalk!

CODE(or however it's spelled)

It seems that your main points regarding high fidelity audio were that large data formats don't really have a chance in a marketplace so dominated by compressed (and therefore, portable and easily transferable) formats.

I find it disappointing that marketing for portable devices focuses on how many songs can be stored and mentions nothing about how good they sound. They are often sold with very poor quality earphones - probably not much better than the $3.00 headsets you can buy on an air plane.

I personally hope that there is at least a niche market for 24bit/96kHz audio formats. After all, many artists are recording in this format (or at least mastering and/or archiving in this format), and I believe that even moderately priced home sound systems can do them justice.

It's a real shame that only mixing engineers get to hear the songs at their very best.
