Crosstalk 51, Part 3: Power-Tube Shootout! Or Valve! Whatever!
September 12, 2008
We've received numerous calls for a power tube shootout, but weren't really sure how we would go about it until we got our hands on a THD Bivalve self-biasing guitar head. This 30 watt, class A gadget runs off of two power tubes of your choosing (you can even mix and match the tube types), so we plugged in EL34s, 6L6s, KT66s and 6550s to give ourselves a tube taste test, and to hopefully spread a bit of knowledge about the world of valve technology.

Squier Classic Vibe
Hey guys,
You showed a brief video of the Squier Duo Sonic from this year's NAMM show and I was wondering if you could do a guitar walkthru of the 50's Strat or any of the guitars in that line cause I was looking to buy another guitar and heard a lot about this series.
Thanks
Emmanuelle
Was there even a mic
Was there even a mic somewhere in the vicinity of the speakers?
umm...
What, in particular, is your critique? We close-mic'd the THD Bivalve through a VOX 2x12 extension cab with a Sennheiser e609 silver. 1" off center, 1.5" from the grill (apprx).
sounds great
...and all of that went through the RME. I think it sounds great and gives a good impression of the different amps we were demoing.
Crosstalk 51
I thought this one was good. Interesting to compare the tubes.
Any recommendations for a low wattage recording amp that can take the different format tubes?
When is the "Where are they now" episode going to be; where you catch up with all the past cast of previous installments of Gearwire?
I don't know if you guys have found this but I have more VSTs installed than I can keep track of. In the last month or so I've been cutting it back to about 20 plugins. I also use about 20 stompboxes now. All guitarists go through a stompbox phase (no pun intended, unless you're David Gilmour)and it seems I've gone through a VST phase as well.
Anyone else finding this? similarities there?
The best thing about this episode was that it reminded me of how good an electric guitar and a tube amp can be, without anything else.
Hoping Gearwire goes back to it's Rocker Meathead roots.
vsts and pedals
i hear ya. My vsts were slowing my productivity way down, so I've been buying more hardware and playing without midi half the time. I like the little mistakes that make music human. of course, you still have to play the music correctly, or it sounds like crap.
i would like to hear the
i would like to hear the difference that preamp tubes make

Podcasts and no iPod
Ok so I bought a Dell DJ when they first came out and unlike all my friends who jumped on the iPod train gang I have yet to need to replace mine. That's right 5 years and still running like a tank, and the same size as a tank I might add. So, the only issue I have ever had in 5 years happened tonight when I tried to download your files. My PC can't play them, Quicktime can't even play them, what's a deal? (My small tribute to Richard Wright there catch it?
HELP?
B. Wright
quick fix
Yes, I hate itunes, but let's not get into that. Just download itunes, go into your preferences>advanced>importer and change the format to mp3 encoding, 320 kbps. Then, go back to the file in itunes, right click it, and select "convert to mp3". That should do it.
Disregard
Ok so running through lines of code all day made my brains mushy like an old banana. I figured it out. Blah, time for something, a kick in the head maybe? Drrrrrrrrr.....
