Crosstalk 36, Part Four: Britton Turns Into A Dog -- A Dog That Likes Grindcore
December 20, 2007
Crosstalk is back with some viewer mail questions. After our mail room guy sifted through all of Britton's fan art, autograph requests, and marriage proposals, we found a few good questions that needed answering. Bill, Britton, and Henry tackle mic preamps for aggressive music, getting life out of your guitar track, and more.
Also be sure to check out Betty Holland, Rhonda Bianco, and Florence "Flo" Wetherald in Moms of Crosstalk as they prepare for their upcoming tour opening for Pig Destroyer.
If you have any questions or concerns (or pee that burns), send us an email at crosstalk@gearwire.com, and we'll make you famous.

I still think you guys
I still think you guys should lose the black background. I liked the brick, it gave the whole show a more personal feel.
well..
the curtain is kind of stuck there, unfortunately, but I've been devising ways to open up the set a little. We might build some theater flats or gel and light the entire curtain. Maybe some nice potted plants and a small stream down the middle of the room. That would be awesome. Maybe a miniature model of stonehenge would work.
On the first question, you
On the first question, you guys skipped over the part of the question that asks "is it really a new *mic* I should be looking for (condenser)?" and only addressed the pre part of the question. IMO, the answer, is no, a condenser would not be a good idea for "aggressive" vocals, esp. if you want hotter levels, since capsules on condenser mics are very sensitive. You'll have to watch out for mic distortion, and this may make it harder to get the higher gain you want.
I do agree with the part you guys said about addressing the problem at the MIX stage w/ compression etc.
I thought we did adress that, but maybe not
I seem to remember talking about that, but it's not really that clear in the video. Yes, we actually came to the same conclusion you did, because the capsules are that sensitive. Thanks for the input, though, because it's really, really useful to have as a footnote to this video.
What realy happend to Drew?
What realy happend to Drew?
um...explos-ion?
Drew's a busy guy, and he just didn't have the time to do it any more. We're not exactly NBC, so it makes sense that he decided to move on.
DAMN henry, your shit is
DAMN henry, your shit is weak. Big ups to Bill Holland.
no worries
you know...Henry's new, but he has a ton of experience. He's just got to get used to how we work.
thanks
I appreciate it, but don't go too hard on Henry. He's got a lot of good information, but he's not used to being on Crosstalk yet. It's his first time, so I would say give him a little time.
I agree, Henry is not good
I agree, Henry is not good on here. He looks uncomfortable. Is he wearing girls makeup? wow.
