Crosstalk 40: Bill, Owen, Henry and Britton Level Their Opinion Cannons On The Lo-Fi Movement

March 11, 2008
Crosstalk 40

Britton makes his triumphant return to Crosstalk and commands a lively discussion about the "Lo-Fi" recording movement, an aesthetic he has extensive experience with and for which he has a definite soft-spot. The group tries it's hardest to veer-off into the netherworld of "post-modern-art-theory," but Bill keeps everything roted firmly in the less heady world of gear, thankfully.

Along with welcoming Britton back, please welcome our new "News Item" lead-in theme, a 70s-era, Children's Television Workshop-inspired jam featuring Britton on Guitar, Bill on synth and Henry on double-necked guitar-bass.

Speaking of which, Henry's thrown down the gauntlet to all you cyberspace haters; listen closely for the details on our first official "Black Metal Riff-Off." The winner gets GW swag, of course, but more importantly, they get to pit their skills against Henry. Did we mention he plays double-necked guitar-bass? Be afraid.

Listen to past episodes of Crosstalk.

Are you guys permanently moving to audio from video? Is it a temporary change or what? I know you guys like feedback, so I'd like to say that I like video better.

Same guy here, I also wanted to say that if you go back to video, reviews of gear where you play with something in the studio are some of my favorite parts of crosstalk.

cool

It's half and half. We're going to audio for the moment until the format is solid. The podcast will also go back to being syndicated, and you will be able to listen to it through itunes as well.

We'd like to bring the gear shoot-outs back, but we're thinking we might start a separate video series for those. We know people love those, so we're working on bringing them back.

Hi guys
awesome topic just one question if you would be so kind. Once you start mastering your own stuff whats a ruff estimated time you should spend on it and compared to qualified professionals roughly how long do they spend on a track once all recordings and elements are final. OH good luck with the black metal comp i have a feeling Henry will not disapoint.
Cheers Guys

Mastering

By: Henry Bianco (not verified)

Thank you kind sir, I too think I will not disappoint. In regards to mastering, I've had a handful of different experiences. My last group had our "farewell EP" mastered by Jason Ward (who was an absolute pleasure to work with) at Chicago Mastering (co-owned by Bob Weston of Shellac fame, http://www.chicagomasteringservice.com) and once we decided how "loud" the finished piece would be as a whole, it ended up taking roughly an hour a song. Different aspects included tweaking some problematic EQ peaks and valleys, de-essing lead vocals, and what probably took the longest time, sequencing the track list and smoothing the transitions from track to track, creating one coherent piece of music. Let's not forget rendering the mastered source material to our final master format, in this case a CD.

The reason I detailed all of this is that I wanted to highlight that it was the same experience working in a fantastic mastering studio as I had mastering my indie pop high school band's demos at our bass player brother's home studio. EQ, compression, normalizing, noise reduction and sequencing were the cornerstones on both occasion. It will definitely take you more time when you're first learning the art, and while my timing might not be exactly what you experience, the 5 or 6 completely different mastering experiences I've had have all seemed to clock in around that time.
