Crosstalk 43: Bill, Henry, Britton And Owen On Vintage Fetishism

May 05, 2008
Crosstalk 43

If you're a dedicated oenologist, when you use the word vintage, you know exactly what you're talking about. The mere mention of a specific year can bring hardcore winos to blows, but in the music gear aftermarket the precise meaning of that oft used word -- like an unfiltered valpolicella -- gets a bit murky.

Being a group of semi-pro musicians who've had their share of experiences in the vintage market (and the shoulder-mounted-chips to prove it) the Crosstalk panel has plenty to say about the gear that they believe deserves the drooling directed at it, and the "vintage" stuff that's really just hot trash.

You know I really empathize

By: Anonymous Coward

You know I really empathize with the flamers. I used to check in with crosstalk with Dan, Britton, and Drew. It was really great! The videos on youtube I learned a lot from. This new group is really hard to take.

This podcast is just so worthless. I really tried to get something out of this, but you guys say nothing helpful at all. What is going on?

It is really sad to see crosstalk turn into this. You guys are just bullshitting with each other here. I'm about to give up on crosstalk. It's a shame.

This is the new crosstalk!?

By: Aaron spears

This is the new crosstalk!? No wonder everyone hates this show. Yikes, i had to hear it myself. The guys on the forums are trashing you hard. Honestly, this was worse than everyone says.

I hope you guys don't get paid for this.

Yep, in its current form it

By: Anonymous Coward

Yep, in its current form it stinx to high heaven

Simple soln.

Sack both NFIs Britton (what has he actually produced that anyone would know?) and Henry (who the fuck is he?)

Re-hire Dan-T-Man (the Guru)

Even bring back Mr Voice (Mike) to m.c. the whole thing

At least Bill seems to know his stuff and applies an objective eye to most things

FUCK e-mail btw..... I never use that old-school method

You guys could always go Skypecast if you had the balls

right...

By: bholland

So, what's actually wrong with the show? We are still offering the same information we were before Drew and Dan left us, but it's in audio format.

All anyone seems to want to do is point fingers, without being specific or taking the time to record their own podcast.

Give us some feedback. If you've ever critiqued a mix for anyone, you know that you have to be specific as to what is good about it and what is not working in it. Let us know what you like and what you do not like. Liking or disliking Britton does not even matter, when you cannot verbalize what it is about the show you do not like. Stop being anonymous, and start helping us make the show better.

Do you miss the demos? The tips on recording? The black backdrop with cable everywhere? What's going on that has everyone's panties in a bunch?

Crosstalk rules!!!

By: Anonymous Coward

Seriously, whoever keeps writing these nasty comments should be ashamed, these bitter haters are truly useless human beings with no purpose.

I actually think crosstalk is great, its informative and entertaining. Definitely nothing else out there quite like this show and whoever doesn't get it is probably to dumb to know what the guys are talking about anyway.

For all those or the guy who hates crosstalk, just go to youtube and view people putting mentos in coke bottles to watch it EXPLODE! or perhaps monkeys picking their bums and smelling their finger.

First, bring back the video

By: Talkative

First, bring back the video format.

What I liked about the old show was that it was primarily about taking a more indepth look a gear than the short review videos found elsewhere on the site. That should be the primary format. Then commentary on "trends," etc. as filler. In other words, it was better before. Look at those shows and do what was being done back then and we'll be back on track.

And for all Gearwire videos in general, get some better theme music, bumpers, etc. Quit using that same overly compressed synth intro for all the videos, it slams the shit out of my ears -- somebody overdid the limiter ... and it's musically very interesting, just a bunch of random notes on a synth. In the old days they changed the music (and visuals) of the intros more often. It was more entertaining, humorous, etc.

Sorry, I meant to type "it's NOT very interesting musically..."

gotcha

By: bholland

the bumpers were done in a hurry a while back. I'm guessing you're talking about the main gearwire bumper, not the crosstalk intro music. We've got it in our priority list to change everything around, it's just one of those things where we have our daily goals and then the bumpers come later, but they are in the works. I'm not sure what you mean by musically interesting, but I'm guessing you're not a big fan of electronic music. The plan is to mix it up for each type of video/tutorial.

As for the format, we've pulled the video simply because of the production time involved given the size of our staff at the moment. I'm sure that as more people come on board, we'll be bringing that back. As for the demos, that is a possibility although it is difficult to do in an audio format.

This is all good stuff, though, and I will run it by everyone here to see what they think. Thanks for the feedback.

"I'm guessing you're talking

By: Talkative 3

"I'm guessing you're talking about the main gearwire bumper, not the crosstalk intro music"

Yes. I've been meaning to complain about it, so I just slipped that in. It was interesting at first, but is now stale and overused.

"I'm not sure what you mean by musically interesting, but I'm guessing you're not a big fan of electronic music."

As I corrected above, I meant to say NOT very musically interesting. I like all kinds of music, including electronic, but this piece is like random notes that just fade in and out. I would prefer a complete musical idea lasting whatever duration. It was fun at first, but in the old days they changed things up more, more styles on the bumpers, more humor, whatev.

Thanks for listening! Keep groovin/rockin, etc!

cool

By: bholland

I actually want to sit down and record different styles of bumpers. I've got kind of a melodic nu-italo track in the works right now, but I want to add an acoustic theme, metal theme, jazz....we'll have a whole bunch of different bumpers. First, we're reorganizing the site so it's easier to navigate, and then we'll be mixing up the themes, so hang in there while we juggle things are to make your experience more enjoyable.
