Da Fact Karlax: Control Digital Music With Bodily Movement
At MusikMesse 2010, the French digital music and visual arts company Da Fact introduced the Karlax, a wireless instrument / controller that basically turns a musician's body into a musical instrument. The Karlax translates one's physical movements into digital audio and sends that sound directly to the Karlax's dedicated software on a computer.
Using an ergonomic design, wireless technology (using radio-waves and MIDI protocol through USB), and high-resolution sensors, the Karlax provides the means for turning visual performances into auditory ones. The Karlax's architecture allows pistons, keys, switches, benders, triggers, a rotation axis, and an inertial unit (made up of an inclinometer, accelerometer, and a 3-axis gyroscope) to be activated separately or simultaneously.
What's more, the instrument has an embedded display screen for viewing and editing settings, making it possible to leave your computer off stage and still play the Karlax.
The Karlax comes with dedicated software compatible with both Macs and PCs.The first production, a limited-numbered series, will be available in the fourth quarter of 2010, for an estimated price of 3,500 EUR (or approximately $4,688).
