Dbx DriveRack 480 Is Mike Ward's Co-Pilot

DBX DriveRack 480 At Suncrest Christian Church

While he'd like to be, Mike Ward cannot always be at Suncrest Christian Church to run sound for services -- what do you think he is, omnipresent? Luckily he can rely on the intelligent PA management capabilities of the dbx DriveRack 480 to protect his PA system from neophyte wannabe sound techs who think they need to push the Church's Bose PA system to the limit. Don't they know Psalm 22:2?

MIKE WARD: Hi. I'm Mike Ward, and we're at Suncrest Christian Church in St. John Indiana, and we're about to walk through the system design in the room.

This is probably the most important piece of gear we have in the building for sound reasons. It's a dbx 480 Drive Rack. This is how we set up our system, our crossover, our outputs to our amps, our overall house EQ. What else do we use it for? We use it as a graphic equalizer to get rid of feedback even though we don't really have problems anymore now that we're on in-ears. It does have a limiter built into it just in case someone else is here when I'm not here they cannot break our system. It's a fail-safe. It has a built-in compressor that I prefer not to use. I don't really like it that's why I use the stereo bus compressor instead.

It's very harsh. You can really hear it breathing, and I prefer not to hear things breathe. So it's just -- it's not your typical standard stereo bus compressor in my opinion. It does the job but if you can have something better, I would prefer something better.

It also has a realtime analyzer built into it that allows us to time line the system. I know you'd ask what kind of show protocol system we use. Dbx has a timeline system in it but I prefer to use Smart. It's just what I was taught in school so I have more knowledge when it comes to Smart than this system so I just prefer to use Smart.

GRETCHEN HASSE: Okay.

MIKE WARD: And actually Smart you can incorporate with the dbx Drive Rack now with the Driveware software and everything else so it's really cool, but for the most part now, we don't have to do a whole lot of timelining except between the subs and the mains because we don't have stage volume.

I need awesome gear... I'd like a free gear catalog!
My opinion is awesome. I'd like to take a gear survey
